‘Thus fear of danger is ten thousand times more terrifying than danger itself.’

Published in 1719, and often considered the first ever English novel, Robinson Crusoe is an exhilarating tale of adventure and survival.

The year is 1651. The young and headstrong, Robinson Crusoe sets sail on a sea voyage against the advice of his parents, chasing a life of adventure. But with every attempt to explore the world beyond comes a new challenge to overcome. Shipwrecked and alone, Crusoe washes up on a remote island with nothing but his wit and grit to survive. What follows is a masterclass in resourcefulness, as he teaches himself to build shelter, grow food and make peace with the wilderness around him – that is until the arrival of a mysterious footprint turns Crusoe’s solitary existence upside down. Compelling and fast-paced, Defoe's classic is a thrilling meditation on self-reliance and strength. So enduring was its appeal that the novel sold through four editions within its first year alone, going on to become one of the most widely published books in history.

Daniel Defoe (1660 – 1731) was an English author and spy. A prolific writer, Defoe is considered one of the earliest proponents of the English novel, renowned for his adventure tale, Robinson Crusoe (1719). He was also politically minded, penning several satirical poems and pamphlets, and acting as a consultant for contemporary political leaders.
