Barely escaping the black flames that took her mother, Ayana is forced to keep secrets that, if learned, will cause her to share her mother’s fate. In the face of grief, a curse is cast that ignites a king’s rage, and Ayana’s father’s war on magic begins. Hoping to break the curse by spilling magical blood, Ayana’s father leaves the kingdom to find his next target.

After years of coming back empty-handed, Ayana thought her father’s war was finally coming to an end, so when he returns from his latest hunt with his new victim in tow, Ayana doesn’t have enough time to save them. Knowing that there is no talking her father out of his hate for all things magic, Ayana offers the captured woman one last request before she is sent to the pyre. Needing to keep her promise, Ayana heads into the woods in search of Plague, the one said to have cursed the world, to tell him the news of the woman’s death. To keep the peace, Ayana continues to go to Plague to nurse him back to health, as well as pacify his hate before he is strong enough to exert his revenge.

Ayana struggles to keep her two worlds apart when her father announces his engagement meant to spread his war across the rest of the nation, and Ayana is forced to make a choice. Remain by her father’s side and join him in his eradication of magic, or join Plague in the woods and help him to bring an end to this war once and for all.
