Poems, Chiefly Lyrical, issued in 1830, is the first major published collection by Tennyson. It addresses many of the themes and stylistic signatures that would define his career and help establish him as one of the major figures of Victorian poetry. The volume gathers a range of short lyric poems, meditations, and narrative pieces, which are unified by mood, rather than plot: longing, memory, mortality, nature, and the tension between ideal beauty and earthly loss. Typically, the poems are highly musical, rich in imagery, and focus on the expression of emotional states rather than direct argument. This collection shows Tennyson in embryo: the melancholy, the mythic imagination, the preoccupation with time and loss, and the almost hypnotic musicality that would later mature in major works like In Memoriam A.H.H. and Idylls of the King. It is a gallery of emotional and imaginative experiments, many of which are among his most enduring early achievements.
