Al arte pictórico le fueron planteados, con harta frecuencia, problemas de índole ornamental, y así, en cierto modo, se volvió al gusto por el ondulamiento de las figuras, que el gótico había sido el primero en practicar y a las representaciones de telas como elementos de vida independiente, con fines decorativos más que puramente plásticos. Unida con la arquitectura, la pintura llegó a desbordar, en un alarde de composición a base de figuras dispuestas de manera hasta ahora desconocida, con fondos sin fin y con un alarde cromático, los límites impuestos por las estructuras murales.
