Operation Mincemeat is the story of a handful of men who believed in using their imaginations to help the Allies defeat the Axis Powers during the Second World War.
Their plan was to dupe the Germans into relocating troops away from Sicily, the Allies' true target, as part of the larger deception known as Operation Barclay. Members of Britain's intelligence services hit upon the audacious idea of planting a dead body to deliver false information to the Germans, convincing Hitler that Greece and Sardinia, not Sicily, were next.
The idea came to Ian Fleming after reading a novel, but the future creator of James Bond was only one of the men behind this daring escapade. Operation Mincemeat needed to be convincing enough that Hitler would stake his defense of Europe on it.
What happened next changed the course of the war in the Mediterranean, and it all started with one dead man who saved thousands of lives without ever knowing it.
