David Bivin
What if we could step back into the first-century world of Jesus and walk on a dusty road with him as one of his first Jewish disciples? Here we examine Jesus’ lifestyle as a Jewish rabbi and consider how his words would have been understood within the larger framework of Judaism. His words grow in clarity and depth when seen in the light of their original setting. David Bivin (1939-2026) was the founder and editor of Jerusalem Perspective, a journal that explores the Jewish context of the Gospels.
Living in Jerusalem, Bivin interacted for decades with some of the best Jewish scholars on first-century Judaism in the world. A life-long scholar of the Gospels, he was the author of hundreds of articles on the life and teachings of Jesus, and he traveled and lectured internationally for more than 25 years. This book is a collection of some of his best writing on the Jewishness of Jesus. Edited for the general listener, the book is a clearly written guide for both curious and serious students of Scripture. The printed version contains numerous footnotes with scholarly discussion and source references.
