あらすじ・解説

In the fascinating new audiobook from the best-selling author of Humanology, Luke O'Neill explores some of the big human questions and tells us what science has to say about topics such as gender, addiction and euthanasia.

  • Why do you think men and women are different?
  • Why can’t you stop doing things that are bad for you?
  • Why shouldn’t all drugs be legal?
  • Why are you wrecking the planet?
  • Why do you think you have control over your life?
  • Why shouldn’t you let people die if they want to?

With his trademark easy wit and clever pop-culture references, Luke is a serious scientist with an amazing knack of making science accessible. If you are curious about us, this bizarre animal called the human being, this is a book for you.

Informative on some topics, but plenty of b*llocks

By the end of this audiobook I was ready to scream at the words Covid 19. We all *know* that it's having an effect, but shoehorning it into every single topic is absurd.

On some of the science, the author is spot on. On other parts, there's been some pretty clear cherry picking of science to fit a political view where in fact it's much more nebulous. While I actually share many of the author's attitudes, I'm frustrated by the way he has glossed over topics that might challenge some of those views meaning a reader is left with the author's opinion and not the facts to come to their own conclusions.

The book is very focused on Ireland at times and I found this refreshing.

The narrator's voice grated on me after a chapter. I recommend listening to the sample and ignoring his accent if you can. His diction is what irritated me, not his accent.

Worth a listen if you're totally uninformed but all in all quite science light.

One of the most interesting books ever

Prof O’Neills way with words and his down to earth dialogue make this an entertaining book about such a diverse range of subjects that make it interesting to everybody. He has obviously extensively researched the facts and studies of some of the most interesting topics of modern life and presented them in a highly entertaining and informative method. I could listen to this over and over. In fact I’m going to download the kindle version now so that I can hope to gain more recollection of the facts for those high stool debates. Very well narrated also however I would have preferred if the professor did the narration himself.

Decent intro to these topics but a little lacking

There were a few issues such as the endorsement of the IAT which is controversial

Topical science themes

Popular science writing, but with a bit of meat.

In fifteen chapters the author/narrator covers a wide variety of contemporary issues, some all too relevant this year (vaccination in a COVID world). By asking general questions, he covers the history of such subjects, how they have developed and where they are both now and are going in the future.

The cost of medicines, diets, depression, drugs, euthanasia, but also some questions that resonate: why aren’t you in jail? Why are you working a b******t job? A full lifetime of questions, that cover the environment, bodies, society, moral issues.

I did find the author’s focus on Irish figures a little distracting and not broad enough, though of course we all have our own country and area of interest. But the variety of subjects was excellent, I enjoyed the format of general questions then getting down to the science. Covering the background as well as relevant modern issues for each question worked to give a full picture.

The author makes an engaging narrator and even gives us a personal perspective when some issues come close to the bone for him.

I really enjoyed listening to this. Some great details I didn’t know, with regards to history of drugs for example. This wasn’t academic enough to put readers/listeners off, it’s accessible and with a touch of lightness about it, while covering a range of important topics that might send you seeking out more in-depth information.

A good starting point for someone interested in scientific concepts but who doesn’t feel confident about difficult-looking volumes.

With thanks to Nudge Books for providing a sample Audible copy.

Great read!

Excellent book- really interesting and Luke’s enthusiasm for the topic is contagious! Was sorry he wasn’t reading it himself initially... but I suppose he’s very busy with all his research and the reader actually sounds like him that you forget after a while it isn’t Luke!

Terrible terrible voice

I don’t mean to be rude, I have Irish friends and I find the accent quite charming. But to listen to a whole book with a thick accent just gives me a headache. I didn’t get to understand whether the content of the book is interesting (probably so!) but I could no longer tolerate listening to that voice. I imagine non-native speakers would also find this difficult to absorb. A professional voice actor with neutral calm voice would have made a big difference for me personally.

A Lot of info

There was a bit too much information in this book for my liking and it may have resonated more if O’Neill narrated himself. I would certainly have preferred to listen to him than this narrator, whose pronunciation of “women” really annoyed me the more I heard it throughout the book.
