あらすじ・解説

All aboard a train bound for murder....

Kitty Underhay is looking forward to a week of long lunches and wedding planning with her husband-to-be, Captain Matthew Bryant. But the plan is derailed when he is called on to collect a former comrade-in-arms, arriving on the 15:50 from Paddington. As the train bearing Simon Travers pulls up to the platform, a piercing scream rises over the screech of its brakes. Travers is dead in his seat, a dagger in his heart.

Who gave this defenseless man a one-way ticket to the next life? And why? And could Matt’s close connection put him at risk? Only a few individuals had access to Travers’s compartment, and Kitty must find out which of these seemingly benign passengers is, in fact, a cross-country killer.

But when Kitty’s prime suspect, the travelling salesman with no merchandise, is found murdered, she is stumped - until she makes the connection between the two victims and realizes that this murderer has an even more deadly destination in mind! Can she stop them, before they strike again? Or will Kitty’s own next stop be the graveyard?

A pitch-perfect, and totally gripping, Golden-Age historical, cozy mystery! Perfect for fans of Agatha Christie, T.E. Kinsey, and Lee Strauss.

The Miss Underhay Mystery series was previously narrated by Alex Tregear, who is now beginning a new adventure as she trains to be an occupational therapist.

Much better narration!

Thank you to Helena Dixon for listening to our thoughts on the last narrator! I've enjoyed Karen Cass immensely in another series and, since Alex is gone for good, Karen is a much better fit to take over for Miss Underhay. The mystery was excellent too!

This series has gone down the toilet

I’ve listened to the full series and I won’t be continuing. I enjoyed the first few and understand them for what they are: cozy mysteries. While there was some charm about the first few books, the series has taken a swift nosedive.

So, here’s what is stopping me from continuing with this series. 1. There is no character development among Kitty and Matt. Honestly, they barely even speak to each other in the book. The first book presented some interesting aspects: Matt’s PTSD and the fact that he’s a widower, Kitty’s missing mother and being stuck running the family business with her aging grandmother. The author seems to think that cycling these two characters through each stage of a romantic relationship is “character development.” The main characters had some palpable chemistry early on. With this book, they are engaged yet spend maybe 5 sentences talking about it. There is almost no interaction among the characters that make up the series, which was the most charming aspect. 2. The narration is terrible. The narration is so sedate that I found myself having to rewind multiple times. The whole book is read with the same tone, the same speed and almost the same voice for each character. Maybe I should sign up to become an audio narrator if all it takes is sounding like you opened up a dictionary and started reading. 3. The stores have become so formulaic. Here is what happens in every story: there’s a murder and Kitty inserts herself into the investigation. An annoying side character named Mrs. Craven shows up during the investigation and insets herself as well. The investigation ensues. Kitty complains about her “independence.” Kitty ends up in peril and needs to be rescued by Matt (for someone who is so “independent” she always manages to end up as the damsel in distress in each book). The investigation finishes and the next step of a romantic relationship is introduced (he’s asked her to be his girlfriend, she’s been introduced to his parents, he’s asked her to marry him, they’ve finally set a date. I’m sure you get the idea). That’s the formula for these books. The next one hasn’t come out yet but I’m pretty sure I already know what happens (maybe it’ll be called Murder at the Chapel?). I won’t find out for sure though because I won’t be continuing with the series.

Pass

I needed a murder mystery for pure escapism but I erred in selection this series. The reviews and synopsis sounded great but after finishing it (I almost returned it but stuck with it because I wanted to write a review) I found it riddled with stereotypes of the British, annoying characters, unnecessary plot twists that don't add anything to the story and a surprising set of heroes that are unfamiliar with dogs. So one stereotype that the British love dogs was laid to rest. The narrator was awful - she fails in trying to speak for the fiancé officer of the heroine. Needless to say I will not follow this series.

Enjoyed!

I have listened all the books and always love the narration except for the last book. This narrator has done a very good job with the characters and The story was very enjoyable.

Another great adventure

I am thoroughly enjoying this series. Great plot and writing. The Narrator of this book (Karen Cass) gives a very good performance, and she is much preferred over Polly Edsall (the Narrator of the previous book).

Appreciated the new Narrator

Still miss Alex, but Karen's version of Kitty was much more to my liking than the previous narrator. the story line is wonderful and I enjoy stepping into the past with Matt and Kitty.

Reads like a less than memorable lifetime movie. Very suitable for putting one to sleep.

This series is very enjoyable.

Really glad I found this series. The author lost the best narrator and so this book is narrated by the third one. She is not the disaster the last book was, Kitty is once again very sweet. Matt doesn't have a terribly manly voice though. However, the oddest thing about this narrator is that she has a cadence and a lilt in her voice sometimes the lilt goes up and sometimes the lilt goes down, but whichever way it goes it conveys complete and utter boredom with the script. The resolution to the murder is just so-so in my opinion. However, if you love this series, you will love this book. It is still an interesting and fun listen.

Great progress

Well written and well-narrated.

Nice progression in romance and the addition of Bertie provides some lightness to the tale. Looking forward to the next one and the inevitable confrontation with E H.

Murder in First Class

This is another lovely murder mystery, where they find their charge murdered in the train when they try to meet him. With such a small group of people to find the killer from they thought it would be simple! Read brilliantly again by Karen Cass.

Another fantastic story

First off the bat I wish Alex Tregear all the best in her new career, she was a wonderful narrator and will be missed. Karen Cass is a great narrator and hope she will be the replacement for the books moving forward! I love her on the Verity Bright series, and her voices are perfect. I do feel sorry for Polly Edsell. I feel if she had been given more guidance she might of been good?

The story is really good I had a lot of fun with this one it was very inspired by Murder on the Orient Express. I have taken the train to Torquay, my dad lives there. I introduced him to this book series. Which he loves. I live in Surrey so I got the train from Redhill to Reading, then changed and down to Torquay. it's a nice ride. But I drive most of the time going on the A303 past Stonehenge.

I can spend hours listening to these stories but most of the time I'm so relaxed I fall asleep, and have to start back from where I can remember! But with this book I listened mostly when I was working or cooking with my headphones on.

I love Kitty and think she is a lovely and likeable character. Matthew is great and I like their relationship. I would like to see it be a bit more playful Matt can sometimes come across a bit to serious, or is that just me? Kitty and Alice are like sisters and really like their relationship too. I am about 1.3hrs away from the end and I think I know who the killer is? Small spoiler. I love the dog. I love dogs and cats. And Matt having a cheeky little dog is great. I just hope he keeps him!

Phew!

Book 7 was seriously bad due to the narrator and had that remained so I would have not returned to this series, but on seeing it was now a Karen Cass which I knew from the Lady Swift series, I came back. Good to be able relax, listen and enjoy the story and not be lost as to who was speaking, their gender or coping with the personality shifts! Now again looking forward to the next in the series.

Another great book from Helena Dixon

I really enjoyed this book. The story had me guessing who did it until the end! Karen Cass did a great job of the narrating, after the last book which was someone new narrating which I didn't enjoy I thought I wouldn't listen to any more Helena Dixon books but whoooo with Karen Cass reading I look forward to the next book.

Narration still needs improvement

This is a great series and is well written, but sadly the producers were forced to change narrator after Book 6. The narrator chosen for Book 6 was dire (see reviews) and Karen Cass, chosen for this book, is definitely better but she has a habit of putting the intonation in her sentences in very odd places. It's off-putting and spoils a very good listen. She either needs better direction or another change of narrator. Alternatively persuade the original narrator to return as we are missing her!!

Not like it used to be

I used to really enjoy listening to these stories but since the narrator has changed I’m sorry but I can’t continue. The way she reads the book is not for me. I’m sure the story is just as good as previous books but I only finished listening to the first two chapters, so I will purchase in paperback or kindle at a later date.

love the new narrator

Another excellent mystery with a train full of suspects. A few of the characters had very mysterious backgrounds which made the story very compelling. I felt sad for Mrs Briggs and her daughter. Some of the other characters were not as likable. The added drama involving Kitty at the prison turned out to be very exciting. I also loved that she and Captain Bryant got a dog out of this investigation. Canine cuteness is always a welcome addition.
Eventhough I loved the previous narrator, Karen Cass has done a wonderful job here.
