The Golem and the Jinni meets A Discovery of Witches in this historical fantasy set in Prohibition Era Seattle where monsters live alongside humans.
It’s been ten years since liquor was outlawed, but here at the Tooth and Claw, Seattle’s monster speakeasy, the party never stops. Mickey Wright is a bard with a magical gift for music — along with human lounge singer Ivy and Sam, a card sharp and seer – he keeps the Tooth humming along under the surly supervision of stoneskin bartender Jos.
Then someone comes along to change Mickey’s tune.
Lucy is a siren journalist. She’s investigating the death of her husband from a poisoned batch of booze — and she’s not above using her irresistible siren’s voice to get what she wants.
Mickey knows the Tooth has been lucky so far, especially since Jos’s long-lost twin brother Jeremiah returns with a bottomless flask of elf-wine, whose golden sweetness intoxicates with pure and blissful hope. No poison, no transport problems, no risk. But now everyone’s got their eye on the Tooth, and when Lucy’s quest for vengeance finds a target, it’s up to Mickey to improvise a way to keep everyone he loves alive.
Or else it will be the last song he ever plays.

"Entertaining and clever... Waite’s control of pacing and tone is pitch-perfect. Her characters, though briefly sketched, are strongly drawn." --Locus on Murder by Memory
"Intelligent and always surprising, Waite’s book artfully weaves a queer love story into a unique hybrid form that is pure entertainment from start to finish" — Kirkus onMurder by Memory
