A Gripping Geopolitical Thriller That Plays Like a Blockbuster.
Reviewed by Christopher Cartwright in Australia on 28 July 2026
Mindset is a sprawling, relentlessly ambitious geopolitical thriller that feels less like listening to a novel and more like watching a major international crisis unfold in real time.
Bill Fortin takes the listener deep inside an invisible war being fought through intelligence networks, political institutions, military power and carefully orchestrated deception. From the corridors of Washington to Beijing, Hong Kong, Iran and the Gulf of Oman, the story moves with cinematic intensity, building layer upon layer of conspiracy until the scale of the threat becomes breathtaking.
Many thriller writers can conduct extensive research and convincingly imagine the inner workings of governments, intelligence agencies and military operations. With Mindset, however, there is an unmistakable depth of firsthand knowledge behind the story. Fortin’s background in geopolitics and the United States military is evident on every page, lending the political maneuvering, operational detail and international conflict a level of authenticity that is difficult to manufacture. The result is a story that does not merely feel well researched, but to Bill's credit, feels lived.
Written in the tradition of Tom Clancy, and W.E.B. Griffin, Mindset: The Invisible War delivers a hard-edged military and espionage thriller built around real-world strategic pressure points, advanced operational systems, submarine warfare, covert extraction teams, political intrigue, and the kind of backroom decisions that shape history before anyone knows they were made.
This is fiction. But the vulnerabilities are very real.
