Maritime Law, Volume III: The Master's Wider Responsibilities

The final volume of this essential three-part series addresses the practical legal responsibilities that every master mariner must understand. Volume III contains ten chapters:

Chapter 1: Salvage – Legal Framework. The International Convention on Salvage 1989, the no cure no pay principle, Lloyd's Open Form, and the development of modern salvage law.

Chapter 2: Salvage – Rights and Rewards. Article 13 criteria for assessing awards, special compensation, SCOPIC, life salvage, and the master's authority to bind the shipowner.

Chapter 3: Towage – Contractual Framework. Towage versus salvage, UK Standard Towage Conditions, TOWCON and TOWHIRE contracts, and the knock-for-knock principle.

Chapter 4: Towage – Liability and Control. The dominant mind principle, allocation of liability, and conversion from towage to salvage.

Chapter 5: Collision Regulations and Liability. COLREGS 1972, apportionment of fault, the both-to-blame collision clause, and evidence preservation.

Chapter 6: Pilotage. The master-pilot relationship, compulsory and non-compulsory pilotage, liability for pilot negligence, and the Pilotage Act 1987.

Chapter 7: Master's Authority and Responsibilities. Agency of necessity, authority to bind the shipowner, safety of life at sea obligations, and MAIB reporting.

Chapter 8: Crew Discipline and Employment. Disciplinary powers, official log book entries, seafarer employment agreements, and repatriation obligations under the MLC 2006.

Chapter 9: Stowaways and Refugees. The FAL Convention, master's obligations, UK national requirements, and persons rescued at sea.

Chapter 10: Pollution Incidents and Master's Liability. Civil and criminal liability, the CLC and Fund Conventions, SOPEP requirements, and the master's duties in response to pollution.

Grounded in IMO conventions and international maritime practice. Suitable for candidates preparing with any flag state administration.
