概要
"'Little Queen'" is a historical biographical story written by Andrew Lang for the 1908 anthology, The Book of Princes and Princesses. The narrative follows the poignant life of Isabella of Valois, a young French princess who was married to King Richard II in 1396 at just six years old to secure peace between England and France. Despite her tender age, the "Little Queen" conducts herself with remarkable grace, dignity, and royal poise from the moment she meets the English envoys. Upon her arrival in England, King Richard treats her with immense patience, kindness, and genuine affection, allowing a deep, sweet bond to blossom between them.Their tranquility, however, is cut short by political tragedy. While Richard II is away in Ireland, Henry Bolingbroke (later King Henry IV) usurps the English throne, imprisoning Richard in the Tower of London, where he is eventually murdered. Following the King's death, Henry IV seeks to legitimize his reign by proposing a marriage between the widowed, ten-year-old Isabella and his son, the future Henry V. Demonstrating extraordinary courage and fierce loyalty to Richard's memory, Isabella steadfastly refuses to align herself with her husband's overthrowers. She holds out against the English court until she is finally permitted to return home to her native France.Blending rich historical detail with engaging storytelling, "The 'Little Queen'" explores themes of innocence interrupted by political ambition and the quiet strength of unwavering loyalty. On Kindle editions, this narrative is published as a central chapter within The Book of Princes and Princesses, making it a classic example of the Langs' celebrated historical retellings for young readers.©2026 Jeanette Burrow (P)2026 Nettie Rose
