あらすじ・解説

From #1 New York Times bestselling author James Rollins, the latest riveting, deeply imaginative thriller in the Sigma Force series, told with his trademark blend of cutting-edge science, historical mystery, and pulse-pounding action.

It begins in Africa . . .

A United Nations relief team in a small village in the Congo makes an alarming discovery. An unknown force is leveling the evolutionary playing field. Men, women, and children have been reduced to a dull catatonic state. The environment surrounding them—plants and animals—has grown more cunning and predatory, evolving at an exponential pace. The insidious phenomenon is spreading from a cursed site in the jungle—known to locals as the Kingdom of Bones—and sweeping across Africa, threatening the rest of the world.

What has made the biosphere run amok? Is it a natural event? Or more terrifyingly, did someone engineer it?

Commander Gray Pierce and Sigma Force are prepared for the extraordinary and have kept the world safe, vigilance for which they have paid a tragic personal price. Yet, even these brilliant and seasoned scientific warriors do not understand what is behind this frightening development—or know how to stop it. As they race to find answers, the members of Sigma quickly realize they have become the prey.

To head off global catastrophe, Sigma Force must risk their lives to uncover the shattering secret at the heart of the African continent—a truth that will illuminate who we are as a species and where we may be headed . . . sooner than we know.

Mother Nature—red in tooth and claw—is turning against humankind, propelling the entire world into the Kingdom of Bones.

Just not like the others

Read them all. Big fan. The story just was just not very good this time.

Surprisingly disappointed in this latest work

Having read almost all of Rollins works, I looked forward to this latest offering. I found that the narration was too monotone for me and the story line did not keep me engaged. I almost stopped listening to it and gave it up as a loss since I could not return it for a refund. I finally persisted simply because I paid for it. It was formulaic and I struggled. Not his finest production.

a bit too preachy...

I've enjoyed Rollins's Sigma audiobooks for years now, and I think this was my least favorite. Although entertaining, it had several themes already used in previous books. I also don't remember Rollins's other novels being quite so preachy... maybe cut back on the editorials next time.

Not Rollins's best work

still it was a pretty good story. The beginning was slow and cofusing and the narration was subpar.

Rather disappointed

I have loved all of James Rollins' Sigma books. It might be the narrator's performance that turned me off. He could not maintain a balanced level of sound. It was either blasting so loud or I was straining to hear what he was saying. The mumbling was distracting. I am not sure if he meant to sound bored or that is just the way he speaks but this narrator really ruined the book for me.
The action was good, but it took awhile for the story to really get going. At times if felt like this book was just thrown together- it doesn't matter if it makes sense or is not physically/humanly possible, I'm just going to write this because it goes with my story line. Overall, not bad, but not great.

Disappointing

I’ve read all of James’ books and I found this one quite disappointing. It hardly read like a Sigma Force Thriller. It was about the Congo and wildlife with some Sigma Force characters thrown in for good measure. Don’t waste your credit.

Made me sleepy

Have read or listened to almost all of James Rollins books. Used to be excited about a new book from him. Not so much anymore. Just trying to get through this book and not fall asleep as I drive and listen. Save your credit for something better.

Not looking forward to next pandemic

But I am looking forward to next Sigma novel. Loved this book. Hated the bats. Finished in two days. couldn't stop listening. Rollins knows how to research his topics.

Kingdom of bones worth the read

James Rollins never fails to deliver and this book is no exception! Pulling from fact, history, and imagination Rollins has crafted a story and can’t put down and when your finished is sure to keep you thinking about it long after.

a bloodbath

No real plot, no character development, only one vicious gory death after another. I have accompanied Rollins on many fantastic adventures., but this was a tedious mess.

Flat narration.

Not one of the author's best. The narrator could be reading a cookbook. I kept trying to imagine how the book could be if it was read by Sean Mangan, but it still wasn't enough.
