"Cannot fail to move those who read it." (Adoption-net)
"Heartbreaking." ( The Mirror)
"A truly harrowing read that made me cry." ( The Sun)

あらすじ・解説

In her new book, Cathy Glass, the number one best-selling author of Damaged, tells the story of the Alice, a young and vulnerable girl who is desperate to return home to her mother.

Alice, aged four, is snatched by her mother the day she is due to arrive at Cathy's house. Drug-dependent and mentally ill, but desperate to keep hold of her daughter, Alice's mother snatches her from her parents' house and disappears.

Cathy spends three anxious days worrying about her whereabouts before Alice is found safe, but traumatised. Alice is like a little doll, so young and vulnerable, and she immediately finds her place in the heart of Cathy's family. She talks openly about her mummy, who she dearly loves, and how happy she was living with her maternal grandparents before she was put into care. Alice has clearly been very well looked after and Cathy can't understand why she couldn't stay with her grandparents.

It emerges that Alice's grandparents are considered too old (they are in their early sixties) and that the plan is that Alice will stay with Cathy for a month before moving to live with her father and his new wife. The grandparents are distraught - Alice has never known her father, and her grandparents claim he is a violent drug dealer.

Desperate to help Alice find the happy home she deserves, Cathy's parenting skills are tested in many new ways. Finally questions are asked about Alice's father suitability, and his true colours begin to emerge.

Heart Wrenching!

As a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) in the America I found this particular book hard to listen to at times. This particular novel took me through the many emotions that I have experienced with the kids I have advocated for. Much like Cathy I have been frustrated by decisions made by Social Services as I worked through a particular case especially. She and the Social Worker found themselves at odds against a system as wheels move slowly in the case.

We forget sometimes that some four-y

new and old together

Little Alice was just in a bad situation and never should have been taken into care. I'm happy to also hear the best part of Lucy's story too! great story!

not one of my favorites

This one dragged on and I found it hard to listen to. Very drawn out and boring, in a sense......not what I expected from a Glass book.

Such a tragic story

This one got to me. As a nurse, I cannot agree strongly enough that lack of funding equals lack of staff. However, this simply does not justify the lack of action at the beginning of this story. This poor, innocent, sweet little girl had to suffer because of ignorance. I am so very glad that she had a happy ending.

absolutely Amazing!!!

I felt that I could put myself in Alice's shoe's not understanding what was going on & also wondering what I'd done to get myself into care, she described those fears so well & exactly how lost Alice must of felt. in the end the person who I could really empathise with was Lucy, to be able to do that is brilliantly wrote, loved every minute of it thanks Cathy 😄

very touching

such a beautiful story again by Cathy. Couldn't stop listening. Cathy does such a wonderful job as a foster carer and the reader is also very good at telling the story.

many tears shed

this is so powerful. as someone who was drastically and life-changingly affected by direct mistakes by social services as a child that lead to me suffering years of torture this had me in tears so much. more because it was all so unnecessary for dear Alice... she deserved better, I'm so grateful Cathy and her ever loving family were the ones to love her in the heart wrenching interim.trie courage by all involved and finally a social worker going above and beyond to see mistakes rectified
