I used to think persuasion was mostly about having good arguments. If I could explain something clearly enough, give enough reasons, answer every objection and prove that my idea made sense, the other person would eventually agree with me. This seemed reasonable. It also didn't work nearly as often as I thought it should.I remember sitting across from a potential client in a coffee shop and explaining, in considerable detail, why he should hire me. I had examples. I had numbers. I had answers ready for questions he hadn't even asked yet. At one point I pulled out my phone and showed him something, then opened my laptop and showed him something else. He nodded through most of it.When I finally stopped talking, he took a sip of coffee and said, “Yeah, let me think about it.”I knew what that meant.I went home annoyed because I thought I had made a very good case. Looking back, I had probably made twelve good cases. I had given him so many reasons to say yes that I had accidentally given him even more things to think about. This happened in other places too. I would try to convince a friend where we should eat and somehow turn dinner into a debate. I would send an email explaining a simple request in four paragraphs. If somebody disagreed with me, my instinct was to add more information. For a long time I thought the problem was that I wasn't persuasive enough. So naturally, I kept trying harder.©2026 Johnny Harper (P)2026 Johnny Harper
