あらすじ・解説

For the Rangers, the best defense is always...more offense.

As an overwhelming army of skeletons, wraiths, ghouls, and other dark creatures - all serving a powerful undead sorcerer - advance against Forward Operating Base Hawthorn, the Rangers must now do what they do best: Go on the extreme offense.

It’s time to Hit and Fade. Attack, withdraw, and outmaneuver the enemy.

PFC Talker, attached to the weapons team section of a Ranger recon patrol led by Captain Knife Hand, recounts the harrowing attempt to destabilize this surreal and horrific nightmare force with everything the snipers, master breachers, and stone-cold killers of the Ranger regiment have in their bag of lethal tricks.

Abating, channelizing, and leading the enemy into a series of devastating traps involving everything from kinetically violent ambushes to immensely explosive crater munitions, the Rangers strike at the enemy as death personified, fading like ghosts only when the dead are dead once again.

When facing Rangers, even nightmares are afraid.

Ranger Fan Boy Fiction

I love a good mil-fantasy as much as the next guy (probably more than the next guy), and Im a stickler for getting the tactical, technical and operational details right, but this was just too much. There was less story development than Ranger promotional material. I really felt the story was negatively impacted by the incessant detailing or Ranger this and Ranger that. I get it, they are Rangers kicking fantasy ass, I am duly impressed with your knowledge or Rangering, please, move on, I didnt want to download a book about The Rangers. Really bummed me out. I wonder what percentage of the total world count is Ranger.

Ranger Ranger Ranger and nothing happening

the first 4 hours consist of 1 action scene that has 15 minutes of action and the rest is:

a) "Ranger gonna Ranger", "Rangers are...", " Rangers will always..", "a Ranger needs..."

and b) the protagonist mentally meandering through 'feels' - and how he is just a linguist but also a ... ranger and what that means [enter 10 minutes of a)], things that could happen or stuff he just "stream of consciousness" impressions that circle back into themselves, then get digress even more to some memory or how 'Ranger' Rangers are when they Ranger. - I am not kidding. it's really that bad.

the infuriating thing is that the core, the action scene is actually really cool. it has some imaginative things going on and you wanna know what's happening, and if it was 15m or stretched by a great author to 30m or 1h with play by play details, strategy, on the fly decision making and reasons given for it, every reader would be glued to his seat.

but this has no strategy, no details that matter. no reactions, strategy and counter strategy, fluid scenes played out so you can really "see" what is happening in your mind.

no. everything, every millisecond is disrupted with digressions about a) or b). Rangers or the protagonists mental off-topic diarrhea.

4h and I am not further in yet. so this could go on for the whole novel.

it is flat out insulting. I space out mentally regularly and I've listened to hundreds of books by now and I never do that. then something cool actually happens and my mind takes a few minutes to realize we're back to the scene where stuff actually happens, and I have to rewind by hitting 30sec a few times.

and as soon as it got good, it digresses and meanders again to some off topic nonsense or some recruiter-style propaganda pamphlet about how Rangers are just the most coolest evar, like totally. really. I'm cereal. cause you know, Rangers.... {15 minutes pass...}

and so on.

This isn't a novel. It's diarrhea. a bait and switch.

avoid

and narrator: it's INT not I-N-T

should give you an impression of how dishonest and fake the good reviews of this are.

Truly entertaining series

Disclaimer, I’m a fan of both authors, I love the Galaxy Edge series, and they have created something that is fun and action packed, TBH, I’m surprised someone didn’t try this before, an elite US military unit goes all “Connecticut Yankee” but instead of back in time, they go forward to a Bronze Age, magic filled universe filled with LOTR type enemies, alive and dead, in closing, a fun listen, excellently narrated, time to start Violence of Action, great stuff, a wild ride

Keep em coming.

When I first read the synopsis for Forgotten Ruin I thought Jason and Nick had lost their minds. This series is one of my all time favorites now. The concept seems goofy at first but it just works somehow. You get magic, orcs, elves, Rangers, and dip. Oh, and don't forget the coffee.

Great job all around guys, already read the third one and can't wait for the audio book. CRG reads a tad slow but I just bump that up to 1.25 speed and it's good. Really like the voices and great range.

PS: We need more Jabba.

Dungeons and Dragons and Rangers

If you loved the first in the series, you'll love this one too! If you haven't read Forgotten Ruin, well, get that one and this one and enjoy them both for the first time, lucky guy.

I thoroughly enjoy the fleshed-out characters as they continue to explore their madcap new reality. Ancient problems require modern solutions; utilizing firepower and high explosives to solve their problems as only America's elite soldiers can, these guys would have cleared the mines of Moiria with style (Carl Gustaf don't care about no balrogs, baby).

The narration is excellent, which is unsurprising as it was in the first book as well.

Get it. You'll have a blast.

It was so worth the wait!

Seriously, this sequel is fantastic. I am not that much of a fantasy fan, but I love military sci-fi. I couldn't believe that it works so well, but hey, thats magic for ya. As I stated in my review of the first book in this series, I should have known better after reading the authors other work. I haven't anxiously awaited the next book in a series ever like this one. I am a huge fan of world building and expansive storylines, and this is my first time experiencing this as the books come out.
In a time when identity politics is forcing so many great stories to change to their detriment to push an agenda, it is SO refreshing to see authors writing for the good of the story. There are characters of every type in these books and none of it is forced, it just flows. The narrator nails Talkers character perfectly and understands the nuances of rangering and how to convey that with the characters. I am glad to see that Last of Autumn has lost the halting speech pattern, that was my biggest gripe of the last book, and that is still just a minor detail.
When is the next one available on Audible?

MORE!

I NEED MORE! Much like the first book this one just hits the ground running and kills everything in its path leaving a wake of dead mystical beings and victorious Rangers leading the way in a ruined world.

AWESOME

It's an absolutely amazing follow up and entry into a new series. it brings you everything you could want, action, story, lore, consequence, growth. You won't find yourself bogged down in heavy handed world building or going numb from inconsequential non-stop action. Just a great story, great characters, and a great universe. Surprise, Losers.

Great follow up to Forgotten Ruin. Great character development and shocks and suprises a plenty. Really good series here. Different but really good with at least 2 more to look forward to 👍
