When a string of neighborhood disappearances ties the present to the past, it's up to a documentarian to uncover the truth...before she vanishes next.
Jodi Wagner returns to the quiet cul-de-sac where she grew up to care for her aging mother. Her first night back, she sees a young woman walking alone down the middle of the street.
The next morning, the woman is missing.
And Jodi is the last person to see her alive.
An aspiring documentary filmmaker, Jodi’s project about the father who walked out on her has stalled, leaving her adrift. Soon she has a new subject: the missing woman. As she digs deeper, she learns of a second woman who vanished from Beverly Court years earlier. Neighbors insist that the reclusive man living next door is responsible. Jodi, reluctant to believe her neighbor might be a monster, turns her camera his way and uncovers damning evidence.
Meanwhile, an older woman recounts her life in 1970s Fresno at the same time a serial killer was terrorizing the city. A teen bride, newly married to a charming but volatile man, she describes how her husband grew increasingly controlling, how she was forced to flee via an underground feminist network for battered women. And how even after escaping, her husband stalked her across the country.
As past and present collide, Jodi’s true-crime documentary becomes more personal than she imagined, uncovering secrets women have kept for generations in order to survive. At its center is a terrifying truth: the worst horrors are the ones closest to home.
批評家のレビュー
Praise for The Neighbors Are Watching
"Thompson is a master at sneaking us behind closed doors into the dark and devious world of rich suburbanites...The Neighbors Are Watching is her best work yet. Good fences aren’t enough to make good neighbors in this entitled world, but you’ll relish every second wondering who will get their just deserts. An exceptional thriller from a major talent." —Alex Finlay, bestselling author of Parents Weekend
"With rich parents behaving badly, kids gone wild, and a deadly cover-up, The Neighbors Are Watching is a meticulously plotted, one-sitting binge read. Nobody scratches the veneer off suburban respectability like Thompson. You won't look at your neighbors the same way again." —K.T. Nguyen, Anthony Award-winning author of You Know What You Did
"Clever and timely with characters that leap off the page. Grabs you from page one and twists you around until the very last words—and that final reveal, whoa! I loved it!" —Jessie Garcia, author of The Business Trip
"Fast paced, clever and richly observed. Another masterpiece of domestic suspense from Thompson, who forges the anxieties of wealthy parents into an unputdownable thriller." —Christine Gunderson, author of Friends with Secrets
"Thompson’s spot-on language and characterization puts the suburbs under a microscope and will leave readers wanting more." —First Clue
"A perfect summer beach read." —Red Carpet Crush
