あらすじ・解説

Book 3 in the Eisenhorn series.

Inquisitor Eisenhorn returns, and this time he’s on the edge of treachery. How far can he go before he crosses the line and becomes what he is sworn to hunt?

Listen to It Because:

Eisenhorn seeks the truth behind a string of disappearances centred around a travelling carnival and a pictographer whose images are more than they seem. Inquisitor Eisenhorn has saved worlds and beaten bad guys galore, in short, he's a hero. But he's also done some dodgy things, and they're coming back to haunt him... His struggle to justify his actions (especially the daemon summoning) make this an incredibly compelling read and rounds off the trilogy perfectly.

The Story:

Hunted by his former allies as a radical and enemy of the Imperium, Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn must fight to prove that he remains loyal as he tracks down a dangerous heretic whom the Inquisition believes dead, the dread former Inquisitor Quixos. As he grows more desperate for victory, Eisenhorn uses ever darker means to achieve his goals, but how far can he go using the weapons of the enemy until he becomes that very enemy, and no different to the traitor he hunts?

A story you will remember

A story with characters you will love and miss. The story of Gregor Eisenhorn is one worth listening to. Keeps you pinned and keep listening. Great character developments and storytelling. Best 40k story ive heard so far.

Story falls Short

Although the performance of the piece has gotten better, the story is weak. Eisenhorn's descent into the chaotic abyss isn't nuanced and is just over the top, while the character attempts to convince himself that he is doing the right thing is eye rolling. Frankly, it just feels relatively out of character, and immersion breaking. If you have to spend half the book telling your readers......I'm doing this for the right reasons....it gets old quick.
Overall, an incredible weak story with a rushed ending and a half-assed throwback villain. Read or Listen to the first book and enjoy. I truly believe Dan Abbot outdid himself on Xenos.

an alright ending to the trilogy

narrator is great. overall it was ok but this was probably my least favorite of the trilogy.

pros: ties story archs all together from previous books. takes a few interesting turns.

cons: too many last second saves from an ally who shows up just in time out of nowhere. his companions were much less interesting this time.

still worth a listen though in my opinion

This was Tough

This isn't like the first two. This story is a hard one. I hated every moment that went by. It was painful. I don't mean the writing or narration; they were just as great, as is to be expected. The story was well done too. However, that story hurt. A lot.

Dan Annett Got Bored

The first two books were extremely fun and enjoyable with an interesting story that wasn't too predictable or cliche. Hereticus seems like Dan got bored of Gregor and was obviously more interested in Ravenor at this point. He trys to redefine Gregor which doesn't work for me at all with the completely out of left field romance. I am not saying that I don't like the idea of these long lived law men needing companionship, but it didn't work at all. Felt like filler and that he was out of ideas in the Eisenhorn saga. The whole premise of this book just didn't work for me. What makes Eisenhorn cool is that he has a demon whom he can summon, and also consults Pontius. Pontius was the coolest part of the story and Toby did fantastic with him. The whole crumpling network he has groomed this whole time and it falls apart so easily and the only reason is that it is easy to transition Pontius to be the villain. What. A. Waste. I wanted an interesting detective story and not a book full of easy and convenient plot conventions.

Relatively Disappointing, and an Unfitting End

Compared to the previous books, this last entry is extremely dissapointing, and unfortunately showcase Dan Abnett's Jack-Of-Trades nature, and especislly his weaker writer earlier in his career. Almost every single event, scene, plot twist, and the entire book for me personally was entirely predictable and almost insufferably generic, down to the last sentence. It plays out even more akin to generic action adventure novels a dime and a dozen that both Xenos and Malleus did, and lacks all of the previous charm in this respect. It perpetually feels rushed, sometimes boiling down extremely important events and scenes to four sentences of vague, expositional summary, instead of a legitimate narrative. I still suggest reading this, but don't pay too much for it, and do not get your hopes up.

When it comes to the performance of Toby Longworth, it comes close to saving it. A legendary voice actor in my mind, Longworth''s performance throughout the Eisenhorn series, contrary to the actual writing, was consistent, and absolutely stellar.

Rambling, poorly researched, easily forgotten

The author clearly has little understanding of the source material. A celebrated inquisitor of the Ordo Zenos who doesn't know what an Eldar aspect warrior is? Who deals more with demons than Aliens? Hangs with Untouchables despite numerous sources stating the he shouldn't even be able to physically stand being near them. Even in the multi shaped puzzle that is the 40K novel universe, this series just doesn't fit.

A fantastic conclusion to a brilliant trilogy

Eisenhorn's will is tested by the warp in this excellent conclusion to a great set of books. Toby Longworth's narration brings the story to life and makes the audio book version a phenomenon in its own right. I could see this book series as a set of blockbuster films, but they would probably ruin it!

Great series

This was a great book, I really enjoyed it a lot. It was quite heart wrenching and shocking, had a very different atmosphere to the others.
I feel that some parts were a bit rushed and others a little over elaborated, but overall I loved it. The voice acting was impeccable, the characters each had a distinct voice and it was a pleasure to listen to. I feel a bit empty now that it's done..

worth reading

I can't say I didn't struggle at times to keep up with the story. Maybe it would have been easier if I read the book instead of just listening to someone read it, even though the presentation was good. This was also the first bookseries in i red from this universe. All in all a book worth reading. I also really like the lore of the Warhammer universe, was looking at severall hours of lore on Youtube, very interesting universe.

excellently preformed fully enjoyed

i spent a lazy sunday and listened to the whole book. it was a enjoyable from start to finish, the performace was well done and executed perfectly. thoroughly enjoyed this and was keep captivated the whole way, the descriptions of fight scenes and psycic powers were enough to draw you in and get your imagination creating the scenes in your head. i would highly recomend this series.

Fitting end to a trilogy

The final arc of Eisenhorns trilogy. Abnett at his best. If you're reading this you've already read the other books and will love this.
