Heirs of the Great Migration is a narrative biography grounded in Dr. James “Manny” Wright’s family journey from Jim Crow-era sharecropping in North Carolina to the promise of manufacturing jobs and greater opportunity in the industrial Northeast.

Wright frames his generation—Generation X—as heirs to the aspirations and sacrifices of the Great Migration and among the first generations of Black Americans to come of age with the full rights of citizenship formally guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution. Yet the America they inherited was undergoing another profound transformation.

Coming of age at the intersection of deindustrialization, the crack-cocaine epidemic, the War on Drugs, and the rise of mass incarceration, Wright experienced firsthand many of the forces reshaping Black communities across urban America. His own encounters with the criminal justice system became part of a much larger journey through educational obstacles, economic upheaval, and the enduring consequences of America's racial history.

Today, as a professor with an MBA and PhD, Wright looks backward across generations to understand how his family traveled from the sharecropping South to the industrial North—and how the opportunities they pursued were transformed for the generation that followed them.
