あらすじ・解説

At the height of World War II, three women must come together to fight for freedom, for the men they love - and for each other.

When Hazel is given the chance to parachute into Nazi-occupied France, she seizes the opportunity to do more for the British war effort than file paperwork. Alongside her childhood friend, French-born Rose, she quickly rises up the ranks of the freedom fighters. For Rose, the Resistance is a link to her late husband, and a way to move forward without him. What starts out as helping downed airmen becomes a bigger cause when they meet Sophia, a German escapee and fierce critic of Hitler who is wanted by the Gestapo. Together the three women form a bond that will last a lifetime.

But amid the turmoil and tragedy of warfare, all three risk losing everything - and everyone - they hold dear. Will their united front be strong enough to see them through?

Grabbed my attention and held it

I love historical fiction, and this story held me in its grip all the way through. I needed an audiobook to get me through several days of driving, and I couldnt wait to get to get back behind the wheel to hear more. The tale that she weaves together of her heroines pays great homage to the real women of the Resistance. Beautifully written and narrated. Very satisfying.

Hearts of Resistance

Just finished the most wonderful story so beautifully narrated. The lives and sacrifices of 3 women during WW11 ,a time when bravery of woman equaled that of a man was told with true reality. I would highly recommend reading this powerful yet tender story of the love woman had for their country and their fellow men

5 Star One Click Must

I have always felt a pull to WW II; the era has always interested me. In Hearts of Resistance, that pull was very strong.

From the prologue to the very end, I was drawn into the lives of Sophia, Hazel and Rose. These three women exemplified what it meant to be a survivor during a time of war and hatred. All of them were of such strong character; I know that the story is considered fiction; however, the attention to detail and to history of the time was spot on.

Ms. Lane has written another heart wrenching, heart warming story that brings to life three women who must endure and survive.

Fiction - but based on real life stories

I really had a hard time putting this book down. Three courageous young women in a time when women were to be wives and mothers, went to war. The pace was fast and the tension never let up as you lived the fear and terror of waiting for the Gestapo at the door. The book felt very realistic, frightening and gritty. The characters were very real and you really learned to care for them even as the war changed and hardened them. The ending was a bit romanticised but overall I loved this book. It was a nice change from most women's literature and I think men would appreciate it too.

Elizabeth Knowelden was outstanding with the delivery of the story

Solid WWII historical fiction

Interesting story and characters. I appreciated that the focus is on women joining the resistance to fight the Nazis. That said, if you haven’t read or listened to The Nightingale, Beneath a Scarlet Sky, or Lilac Girls, I recommend them more highly. I listen to many audio books and usually the performance is good or great. This narration is not. I kept being distracted by the extra noise the narrator makes. She sounds like she is loudly whispering all of the speaking lines. There are lots of hissing and extra “sh” sounds most of the time. I understand she is reading English and perhaps trying to remind us that the conversations are often in French or German. Still, the narration should be much more crisp.

horrible waste of a credit

Predictable, cheesy and poorly written. At one point the phrase 'she gulped' was used 6 times in the same chapter... and the narrator was also pretty bad. save your time.

Bit dull

Too focused on love stories than any actual action; obviously it’s there for a specific audience. If you are interested in more historically accurate and detailed accounts of resistance, try the Nancy Wake biography

Slow & Steady wins the war

A great concept about one of the most exciting aspects of WW2 - had the potential to be exhilarating but fell short for me. Plenty of repetition & laboured points - though the narrator was excellent so it was palatable.
