あらすじ・解説

Finalist for the 2020 Edgar Award for Best Novel

From the internationally best-selling author who Stephen King calls “an absolute master...with heart and soul”, a fiendishly clever thriller about a dangerous young woman with the ability to know when someone is lying - and the criminal psychologist who must outwit her to survive.

A girl is discovered hiding in a secret room in the aftermath of a terrible crime. Half-starved and filthy, she won’t tell anyone her name, her age, or where she came from. Maybe she is 12, maybe 15. She doesn’t appear in any missing-persons file, and her DNA can’t be matched to an identity.

Six years later, still unidentified, she is living in a secure children’s home with a new name, Evie Cormac. When she initiates a court case demanding the right to be released as an adult, Forensic Psychologist Cyrus Haven must determine if Evie is ready to go free. But she is unlike anyone he’s ever met - fascinating and dangerous in equal measure. Evie knows when someone is lying, and no one around her is telling the truth.

Meanwhile, Cyrus is called in to investigate the shocking murder of a high school figure-skating champion, Jodie Sheehan, who died on a lonely footpath close to her home. Pretty and popular, Jodie is portrayed by everyone as the ultimate girl next door, but as Cyrus peels back the layers, a secret life emerges - one that Evie Cormac, the girl with no past, knows something about. A man haunted by his own tragic history, Cyrus is caught between the two cases - one girl who needs saving and another who needs justice. What price will he pay for the truth?

Emotionally explosive, swiftly paced, and “haunting...Robotham expertly raises the tension as the action hurtles toward the devastating climax” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

Great Book, Great Book.

I have read/heard all of Robotham's books and thought all but perhaps one were excellent. This is in my top three of his, if not my favorite now. As much as I've enjoyed Joe O'Loughlin, I may like Cyrus as much or more. The interaction between Evie and him is so well written and the story flows and twists so well. I'm going to try to avoid risky situations so I live to see the next book released.

DESPITE THE TITLE ....

Unique story and outstanding narrator make this audiobook very much worth using a book credit on or buying it if you have no credit. Kudos to everyone involved with production of the audiobook except for whoever gave final approval for the title -- the author and book deserved better. I almost didn't get the book because I'm truly tired of all the "girl" books.

Interesting and entertaining story and characters

I thoroughly enjoyed the story - on par with the Joseph O'Loughlin series. Narration was excellent. Remarkable job on the female characters. Also, having just listened to a book with poor sound editing, I appreciated the high quality of sound engineering in this audiobook.

Did not disappoint!

Michael Robotham hit it out of the park again! Love Dr Haven and can’t wait for another novel. This book really kept me engaged and I found myself hurrying through work so I could continue listening. I’ve read all Michael Robotham’s novels and they are all great reads or listens!

A different kind of Robotham

Not what I’m used to reading from Robotham but thoroughly enjoyable. I’m very picky about what I read but am a big fan of his. When I saw this was available for pre-order I immediately did and couldn’t wait to listen.

A STORY ABOUT A GIRL THAT YOU’LL NEVER ACTUALLY HEAR!!

I listened to that whole book just to get THAT ending?!? If you aren’t going to tell us what happened to the girl in her past, why have the girl at all?!? The whole book could have been written without that character at all. I’ve never read a mystery that ended without telling you what the mystery was — nevermind resolve it. This isn’t just a book without a resolution - I get why authors do that — but this was a story about a girl but you never get to know her story. I feel cheated and I wish I could get those hours back. I’m just glad the narrator was great and the second storyline (not about the girl) was good. Disappointed.

Oddly naive

I did listen all the way through to this mystery, so maybe 3 1/2 stars would be more accurate. However I was often taken out of the world the author creates by the unlikely details. Would a young woman who was badly sexually abused for many years really be released at three minutes notice to a single man who offers to become her guardian? This is the realm of regency romance, not modern thriller. Would questioning of potential witnesses be done at the spur if the moment in a large group, as if raking place at a cocktail party? It had the feel of slightly lazy writing.
