A fascinating retrospective on the life and career of one of Hollywood's most enigmatic actors, George Peppard.

In George Peppard: A Life, Jerry Roberts offers the definitive biography of one of Hollywood’s most intriguing yet forgotten players, an A-list star known for his decades-spanning performances in essential films such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), How the West Was Won (1963), and The Carpetbaggers (1964), as well as his career revival in the television show The A-Team (1983-87). The actor was press-shy, tough to pin down. Roberts explores Peppard’s history candidly, as someone known for his loyalty and work ethic, as a ladies’ man and prodigious drinker, and as a loner who didn’t fit anyone’s idea of a Hollywood joiner or glad-hander, who kept his family out of the limelight.

Peppard was famously difficult to work with, distrusting producers, rewriting scripts, and offering unsolicited advice to directors. His leading ladies shared unfavorable opinions of him, and yet one of them married him—twice. In fact, Peppard married five times, and the alimony payments and other debts, plus increased drinking, sent him to rock-bottom in 1978, from where he believed dinner theatre might be his final chapter.

Featuring exclusive interviews and filled with behind-the-scenes stories including contretemps on Breakfast at Tiffany’s; when the director of How the West Was Won was nearly fired and the final train shoot-out abandoned until Peppard threatened to walk off the picture; and a virtually unknown episode where actors were almost killed in a train accident and Peppard’s stunt double lost a leg and an eye, cinephiles and fans are sure to be entertained and to learn something new about a classic, iconic Hollywood great.

批評家のレビュー

More than a Hollywood heartthrob and far more than the cigar-chomping leader of The A-Team, George Peppard emerges in this riveting biography as a gifted, complex, and fiercely driven artist whose life was every bit as dramatic as the roles he played. Drawing on extensive research and fresh personal insights, Jerry Roberts traces Peppard’s journey from Depression-era Michigan to international stardom, revealing the triumphs, battles, contradictions, and resilience behind the public image. Rich with behind-the-scenes stories, candid revelations, and a deep appreciation for Peppard’s enduring legacy, George Peppard: A Life is an engrossing portrait of a talented actor who left an indelible mark on film, television, and the people who knew him. (Marshall Terrill, author, "Steve McQueen: The Life and Legend of a Hollywood Icon")
Jerry Roberts has delivered an encyclopedic analysis of the complicated, fascinating life of George Peppard. It’s all here: from Breakfast at Tiffany’s to The A-Team, from tumultuous marriages to career rebirth. Highly readable and extensively researched, George Peppard proves compelling from start to finish. (Tom Santopietro, author, "Audrey Hepburn: A Life of Beautiful Uncertainty")
"Though not a star of the level of McQueen or Newman, George Peppard was an intriguing figure from Hollywood's second golden age. His films and TV shows were never hip, but they spoke to a vast swath of middle America. Other actors found him difficult, but, as Jerry Roberts illustrates in his excellent George Peppard: A Life, he reliably prepared and brought his considerable talent to the set, giving his best time and again in spite of battles with the bottle and other personal demons. Peppard was much more than the commander of the A-Team." (W.K. Stratton, author, "The Wild Bunch: Sam Peckinpah, a Revolutions in Hollywood, and the Making of a Legendary Film")
