Debra Mottier’s story began in a railroad boxcar in eastern Oregon—no running water, no electricity, just a family struggling to survive. From that boxcar to remote railroad houses scattered across the rural West, she grew up navigating poverty, instability, and a volatile home life that taught her to stay small, stay quiet, and carefully read every room she entered. Yet Debra refused to believe that her beginning had to determine her future.

As her family moved from town to town—from eastern Oregon to Kemmerer, Wyoming, and back again—she became keenly observant and deeply resilient. Often feeling like the “black sheep,” she saw truths others were unwilling to acknowledge. At eight years old, she found an anchor in faith that would sustain her through some of life’s darkest seasons. As a teenager, Debra made choices in an effort to escape an abusive home, choices that nearly cost her everything.

A hasty marriage at seventeen, motherhood at nineteen, and a partner whose struggles reflected the very chaos she had hoped to leave behind threatened to pull her into the same cycles that had shaped generations before her. But through determination, perseverance, and an unwavering belief that a different life was possible, Debra broke free.

From a Boxcar to a Diamond is more than a story of survival. It is a testament to the power of faith, resilience, and the courage required to choose a different path. It is a story for anyone who has ever wondered whether they can escape their past—and discovered that they do not have to outrun it. They simply have to refuse to let it define them.

Perfect for listeners of Educated, The Glass Castle, and Hillbilly Elegy.
