A lonely boy. A rare wild horse. And an extraordinary friendship at Washington's National Zoo.
Jebby Andrews, a middle-school student transplanted from rural Virginia to Washington, DC, finds an unexpected friend in a lonely Mongolian wild horse at the National Zoo. The mare is a Przewalski's horse—an ancient and endangered breed that has never been domesticated.
Determined to free the mare from her barren paddock—and convinced that he can ride an animal that has remained untamed since prehistoric times—Jebby ignores warnings from those around him. His quest leads to midnight adventures at the Zoo and in Rock Creek Park and encounters with a remarkable cast of characters, including a Tibetan lama, a Central Asian explorer, a U.S. senator, a Bactrian camel, and a gang of boys who have been tormenting him.
First published in 1963, Ann Cottrell Free's award-winning novel combines adventure with enduring themes of wildlife conservation, respect for animals, and the relationship between people and the natural world. Free was a founder of the Friends of the National Zoo and a noted nature and animal-protection writer.
