あらすじ・解説

From the number-one New York Times best-selling author of the Shopaholic series comes a terrific blend of comedy, romance, and psychological recovery in a contemporary YA novel sure to inspire and entertain.

An anxiety disorder disrupts 14-year-old Audrey's daily life. She has been making slow but steady progress with Dr. Sarah, but when Audrey meets Linus, her brother's gaming teammate, she is energized. She connects with him. Audrey can talk through her fears with Linus in a way she's never been able to do with anyone before. As their friendship deepens and her recovery gains momentum, a sweet romantic connection develops, one that helps not just Audrey but also her entire family.

I chuckled for six hours straight

I found this novel amusing. I like the cleverness of the story. The supporting characters made it work. This is not ha ha funny, but a steady under-current of chuckles. I also liked that Kinsella never dug into the darkness of the event but explored the aftermath.

If you like heart warming amusing YA novels this one is for you.

Quick, Easy Listen

Finding Audrey was a quick and easy listen.
The story is about a teenage girl and mental health and her process through this time in her life. The subject matter is a little tough at points, but the narratour does a great job of keeping the listener in.
Gemma Whelan the narratour has a very pleasant and easy voice to listen too.
Sophie Kinsella has written several of my favourite books including the Shopaholics series. Finding Audrey is not as light as many of Kinsella's other books, but it does still have some of her humour weavae throughout the story.

So what happened to her?

Don't want to spoil the story but there is a huge plot line left unexplained. It could certainly be argued this portion of the story was more backstory and not the main point but it's eluded to enough to make the reader curious. Honestly, I don't think the writer could come up with an answer to the question so it was left out. Could have been great but I was very frustrated at the end.

Don't Believe the Hype

I do not know why this was rated so high. I can only guess that some of the lower reviews were suppressed and not posted. I love Sophie Kinsella books, but this book is neither funny nor well-written. The first half doesn't even deal with the title character. So, if you want to listen to a shrewish mother screaming at her sullen teenage son about how he plays too many video games, then this is the book for you. AND if you want to believe that mental illness can be cured by finding a cute boyfriend, then again, this is the book for you.

As someone who has actually dealt with anxiety and depression, I found this book ridiculous and repugnant. If the audience is the young adult crowd, then Kinsella is sending younger girls the message that boys can fix anything! Just find a boyfriend and you'll be cured. You'll like yourself again and you'll be happy, and your anxiety attacks will magically disappear!

However, the book isn't written for young adults. Audrey's mother is more of the main character than Audrey herself, and the unfunny plot is more about Audrey's parents dealing with her brother than with Audrey. Because the bullying incident that precipitated Audrey's anxiety and agoraphobia is never described or explained, you get the idea that her problems are caused by her parents... because they should be blamed for everything, apparently.

Further complicating the listen is that the majority of the book is read by one actress. However, there are occasional breaks featuring Audrey's "film" where other people read. The difficulty is that the film transcript portions don't differ in tone at all from the rest of the first-person narration. In these portions, there are different voices reading, except that the woman doing the primary narration reads the "screen directions," but does not seem to read for Audrey and the brother's voice is deeper than the father's, which is bizarre, since he's supposed to be a younger teen. The film transcript portions are exceedingly annoying. I don't like full cast recordings, typically, and I wish this had been listed because the device does not work.

Five Star Read ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Loved the storyline about a teenage girl dealing with depression & anxiety. I'm a 43 yo wife & mother and I can really relate to this book and wanting to be isolated. Great job, Sophie!! Another great read!

Eye-opening

This book was incredible! I found it to be enjoyable despite the fact that I am not a young adult reader. I initially consider the book because I am a fan of so if you can Cella, however when I read the description of the book I was curious because I myself have anxiety and depression.
I learned a surprising amount about my disorder as well as my boyfriends who also suffers from social anxiety generalized anxiety and depression. I would recommend this book to any teenager who has mental illness, or knows anyone with mental illness. As a matter of fact I think this would be one of those books that should be read in eighth or ninth grade English classes. It truly is an amazing view into a young woman's mind and how she deals with her problems it is also a fantastic porch rail of the consequences of bullying on those who are bullied. Not only that, but it is the story of a journey of the family trying to find their way, and trying to do what's best for each other. Overall this is a great read! :-)

nice book

it is a light romance comedy young adult novel. I would prefer if the author tells audrey story before she got ill. i understand she went through a bully situation in school but we didn't know the exact story. but overall I liked the book and the characters sense of humor especially the mum. I think it is a good script for a family movie.

totally relatable

As a mother and a mother to a child with anxiety and depression I loved this relatable story. My daughter thinks I am nuts sometimes, she is right and I see her struggles and she gets that too.
SPOILER ALERT:
i have enjoyed other Kinsella books, but only gave this one 4 stars because we never learn the cause of Audrey's drama. in some storytelling, writer way I suppose it doesn't matter, but it matters to me. I want to know the drama!
