Fifty Cents for a Dr Pepper is about an 11-year old boy, Timmy, who wakes up in a storm drain in St. Louis with blood on his Nike pullover. And he's not sure it's just his own. Timmy begins the journey of re-discovering who he is, who he was, and how we can return to a life he doesn't quite remember. Through trial and error, he learns first-hand about dumpster diving and surviving, no matter what it takes.
A few months pass, and the streets take a toll on the one commodity he has: a cute dimpled face to swindle with. And then he learns the truth – Max isn’t who he says he his, and the boy might not be the bad kid the old man continually claims. Timmy vaguely remembers a time when he had a mom and dad who adored him, when his older brother Sam was the studliest role model a kid ever needed, and when the concept of change meant the jingle-jangle he and his friends would spend for their sodas of choice. But not anymore.
Change was something he had to take into his own hands, no longer a meager fifty cents for a Dr Pepper. Fifty Cents for a Dr Pepper delves into the possibility of how the human spirit gets broken and attempts to mend itself. Skippy, Timmy’s best friend, is his faithful companion, but a tail wag isn’t always enough. Their cardboard home has weathered right along with hopes of returning to a neighborhood he can only remember in his dreams. But snips of a long ago night come knocking in his sleep. Broken images of pain, suffering, and a guilt ebbing through him like rancid water. He did bad things that night.
The images are so remote he can’t be sure they’re even real. In time, he hopes – and fears – he will uncover the truth.
