Saccharine and Fluffy

Key take home messages include “teach your boys to watch porn” and “plastic surgery is empowering” and “men have periods too” (but also “if men had periods tampons would be free”, and somehow these two points don’t contradict each other?)

The worst take might be to teach boys if they ask for consent they’ll be a “legend” amongst the girls because she’ll tell all her friends. Or maybe the worse take is the entire chapter about being kind to boys, protecting boys, and if we are nice enough to boys they won’t rape or kill women when they’re older because women will remind them of their kind mothers. Presumably, this means the mothers of rapists are to blame for their actions?

Anyway, if you can overlook these anti feminist and regressive key points repeated in various chapters, Keira Knightley’s piece on childbirth is beautiful and powerful, some of the poetry is enjoyable enough, and some of the pieces on more serious issues, like FGM and period poverty, are valuable and insightful.

Overall, saccharine, reads like angsty teenage spoken word, but is a relatively sweet introduction into liberal feminism.

Mixed

There were some great personal essays in here, but also some very repetitive ones that didn’t really add anything. I also think the audiobook could have benefited hugely from having the original authors of the essays read their own work. The voices used instead were very samey and contributed to the repetitive feel of some of the writing.

very inspiring, interesting read

A book that gives you lots to think about. It's so great to hear all the different view of feminists and what the movement means to them or just what it means to be a woman.

Brilliant and Thought Provoking

I loved this book and thought it was excellent as an audiobook. It is a collection of essays from different women discussing what feminism means to them. I've never considered myself a feminist, thinking that men often suffered at the expense of women gaining power. However, I now realise this was misguided and everyone should be equal from the beginning and if women didn't have to fight for it then it wouldn't appear that men are suffering. These women don't just talk about women's rights but equality for ALL.

I'm a feminist but... I absolutely hate this.

everything about me wanted to love this I'm a feminist I want to encourage people to be feminist I want to hear people's perceptions and views on being feminists but this audiobook and the book just leave me cringing. some of sections like the A - Z are just absolutely awful. this just seemed to be an eclectic mix of people's ramblings there's nothing in power and within this book. it's such a shame as I really wanted to like it I bought the book along with the audible in hopes that I would love it but sadly I just don't.

Glad I stuck with it!

The beginning really isn't good, but it gets so much better. Very western centric though.

INCREDIBLE

I couldn't stop once I started! Powerful, educational, laugh out loud funny and then the next chapter reaching for tissues. A sensational collection of similar yet very different perspectives by some pretty bad ass women. LOVED it.

Mentor

This book is historical, it's current & it sees a future. I like it's directness & sometimes eye opening.
It will be excellent for my two daughters so I forwarded it onto my eldest to read it first.

I have never felt so uneducated.

Wow. This book shares so many different and diverse experiences and perspectives on feminism from women and members of the trans community. I feel mad and I feel happy and I am inspired.
