You keep meeting them: thoughtful, decent, quietly capable people the headlines insist have vanished, behind the hardware-store counter, in the next seat on a delayed flight, at the gym before sunrise. So where did all the good people go?

Its author spent the better part of fifty years reading people for a living, across jewelry counters and factory floors, watching how human beings actually decide what to believe. He set out to answer that question about the world. This book is what happened when the question turned around and pointed back at him.

What he found was not a story of decline. It was stranger, and more hopeful. Our picture of one another, he came to see, is quietly assembled for us out of true pieces, selected and framed and repeated until the picture begins to feel like reality itself. We inherit the stories. The stories shape what we notice. What we notice confirms the stories. And somewhere in the turning, we lose the ability to tell an interpretation from the plain face of the world.

This is not an argument to win, or a belief to adopt, or a claim that the past was good and the present is broken. It is a patient, personal look at how decent people get absorbed into screens and roles and their own unexamined certainties, written by someone who spent years absorbed himself and is honest about still slipping back. There is no program in it, and no one to blame.

What it offers is quieter, and harder to unsee: the practice of catching a story before you obey it, and the surprising thing that happens to your eyes once you do. The good people never left. We may only have stopped seeing them.
