‘Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all.’

Emily Dickinson: Selected Poems expertly brings together the finest works from one of literature’s most singular, haunting voices.

Uniquely powerful in their theme and form, the poems in this stunning collection offer an insight into Dickinson’s vibrant, eclectic and emotionally charged world. With startling meditations on death, mortality, nature and passion – rendered in her trademark use of fragmented sentences and slant rhyme – Dickinson’s verse rewards endless re-reading, capturing the hearts of newcomers and devoted readers alike. Although an undiscovered genius during her lifetime, Dickinsons poems, and their ability to transform the trivial into the extraordinary, the self into the spiritual, have endured. Including her most celebrated pieces such as ‘Hope is the thing with feathers’, ‘Because I could not stop for Death’ and ‘I felt a Funeral, in my Brain’, this collection cements Dickinson as one of the major poets of the nineteenth century.

Emily Dickinson (1830 – 1886) was an American poet. A prolific writer, Dickinson penned over 1,800 poems, most of which explored themes such as death and mortality, nature, the self, love and spirituality. Although her work was largely unpublished during her lifetime, today it is widely celebrated as some of the finest poetry in American literature.
