"Through her pacing Traister keeps listeners engaged with this police procedural and with Maddix, a woman damaged by childhood violence and committed to helping others." (AudioFile)

あらすじ・解説

An obsessive killer, a witness with secrets, and a deputy US marshal with her own dark demons collide in this gripping mystery from the bestselling author of Cold Dark Places.

Dylan was only a child when he and his friend stumbled onto a crime scene deep in the woods. His friend was killed that night. And Bruce Forrester, the man who had chased the boys in the woods, disappeared. But he’s never stopped looking for the only living witness. Ever since, Dylan and his family have been on the run.

Deputy US Marshal Cady Maddix knows what it’s like to be haunted by a traumatizing childhood. She’s determined to track Forrester down and give Dylan the peace of mind he deserves. Only the more Cady delves into the case, the more pieces of a strange puzzle emerge - about Forrester, Dylan, and Cady’s own inescapable demons.

As Cady grows closer to separating the truth from the lies, someone is determined to stop her at all costs. And the consequences of putting the past to rest could prove deadly.

GREAT MYSTERY!!!!

I love the first book in this series and was a little concerned with just one narrator. After listening to both Christina Traister and Andrew Eiden, I was afraid that Christina Traister wasn't going to handle ALL the characters' voices alone but BOY WAS I WRONG!!!! My hat's off to her. I can't say that I was disappointed in any of her voices. She's a master in my book and I'm picky! I hope Kylie Brant releases another mystery in this series very soon!

Start with the first book and you'll have a better understanding of Cady Maddix.

Another great Cady Maddix murder/mystery..

I really enjoy the Cady Maddix books. She a tough cookie but she’s not always trying to kick someone’s butt. She a good leader. This was about Forrester, Loomer and Teeter were some really bad guys. And Dylan was a really nice teenager who was constantly running for his life. As his mother was just a piece of trash. This was a very good book.

There was no romance or sex whatsoever. And the F-bomb was used 64 times.

As to the narration: Christina Traister did a fine job on both the male and female voices and had incredible emotions when she read.

Liking this series, moving to book 3

This book offered good progression of Cady’s personal story, and the plot of the main story was terrific.

The narrator was still ok, though I personally find her pitch too high for comfort. She does male voices really well. One warning is to maybe not listen when you’re trying to relax because— raises the subject matter—when she does the “this is the police, get down” sort of thing, she is reeeally loud and sharp; not at all peaceful. Lol

Cady is back!

Cady is back trying to find a killer and protect 15 year old Dylan. She is also trying to cope with her past, her love life, and her own future. The story is well done, very descriptive, but a bit muddled. Lots of supporting characters made it a bit of a challenge to figure out what to focus on. I loved the development to Dylan’s character and experiences. I wanted more of Cady’s relationship development, it is “closed door” to the point that I missed the relationship having a bit more attention and heat. Dylan’s mom is definitely not mother of the year and his uncle is a whackadoo for sure, but the story behind these characters felt a bit surface and like something was missing. Just a lot going on but in the end it came together really well and with a sense of satisfaction. I would definitely read another Cady Maddix book, especially with amazing narration! It was perfectly done!

Appalachian accent

Only the uneducated and undesirable seem to have southern accents . The southern accents and inflections of the characters are not characteristic of this region . I am a native of Haywood County and was disappointed in the inaccuracy.

This Book is Terrible

The narrator is the number one reason this book got such low reviews. She makes all females sound like ditzy airheads with a California valley girl spice. I found myself tuning out just so I wouldn’t have to pay attention to her voice. Then there was the sex. I’m no prude! But this was like Cinemax after dark. I’m over all the female detectives with trauma in childhood, or dad was a cop, and they’re single with a dog, and some agent comes in to save the day and be their hookup. Lame. Be more creative.
