あらすじ・解説

Insightful, enlightening and thought-provoking, leading Premier League lawyer Daniel Geey lifts the lid on the inner workings of modern football.

Whether it is a manager being sacked, the signing of a new star player, television rights negotiations, player misconduct or multi-million-pound club takeovers, lawyers remain at the heart of all football business dealings. Written by leading Premier League lawyer Daniel Geey, who has dealt with all these incidents first hand, this highly accessible book explores the issues - from pitch to boardroom - that shape the modern game and how these impact leagues, clubs, players and fans.

Featuring insider anecdotes and expert contributions, Done Deal provides football fans with a fresh and authoritative perspective on all off-field football matters.

Dry list of contract clauses

In essence this book is just a dry list of contract clauses. I am an attorney and it was even boring for me.

Great insigt into the working of transfers

This is a good book, some of the book is based on numbers which are difficult to comprehend while listening but numbers are not important the reasons behind them are quite important. Good book.

Loved it, very interestingly different and looking at a subject that I find particularly fascinating, in a totally new way..

Turgid & Unenlightening

I'll start by saying the narration is fine; there's little the narrator could do to make the text engaging. Insights such as "before a transfer can be made, clubs must agree a fee" keep popping up in later chapters. The writing lacks style, is dry and is devoid of facts beyond those that even a casual football fan would know. The author himself states that his holidays and other things have involved him being on the phone making deals. From here what we are served up his a bone dry, information light homily to the corporatization of football. I'm left incredulous that the editor of this book did not come down hard on the author for flogging the term "beautiful game" to death. By chapter 6 I had heard it way too many times for me not to wonder if it was left in as a joke. This book exposes nothing, regurgitates well known facts, reinforces platitudes that belong in world cup beer commercials and compounds this by being incredibly boring and written without style. It reads like an unenthusiastic teenagers homework assignment, one supplimented generously by Wikipedia. Gianluca Vialli's phoned in introduction sets the tone. Simon Kuper is easily a better writer on the subject of football. All Daniel Geey manages to do in this book is convince me of how little the world requires coproate lawyers.

Informative but no spin

Really good narration but the book itself is mainly facts about the football industry - it's very procedural and thus doesn't really offer an opinion on the elements it uncovers eg why a fit and proper person's test is inadequate, what the solution to overpaid agents could be, or even any real juicy anecdotes about players. Overall quite disappointing.

This is not a book about transfer deals.

Transfer deals are briefly mentioned at the start, but then the book digresses into such topics as “what premier league players have been banned for in the past” and “why managers might rotate their starting 11’s”. None of these topics (including transfers) are covered with any specific insights, beyond the basic principles - “some deals have add-ons”, “not all of the transfer fee is payed up front”. I usually rate everything I read very highly but I am very disappointed by this book. This should be called a beginners guide to football contracts or something, because anyone buying this expecting deep insight will be very disappointed, like I am

Reads like the transcript of a rule book

This was recommended to me after listening to The Secret Footballer. When you get a book like this you get it for the human touch. Stories, opinions, real life tidbits and experiences of the author. This book just seems like its a reading of the Premier League Rules and Guidelines. If I wanted that I’d go on the website and read the PDF myself.

Some Fascinating Insights, But No Real Juicy Bits

A really interesting look at this side of football, especially (for me) the actual breakdown of how contracts are arrived at and paid out. I was hoping for a lot more examples of bizarre demands that have been made / negotiation spats etc which sadly weren't included but overall it was still an enjoyable listen and am happy to recommend it to others.

very good detail

I learnt alot listening too this. the detail level was amazing. a great insight into the business of football. the only downside for me was that it takes alot of concentration to listen to it, due to the fact it's all about figures and details

No Real Insights

Unfortunately, this is a repetitive book with no real insights fans of the game won't already have at least a vague understanding of (i.e. two teams seek to agree a fee before transfering a player). It seems that the short chapters would make this work better as a referal handbook than anything else.

One of those books which can provide unique view

This books gives a unique perspective into the details how football contracts are done. Good listen to new fans but if you have played Football manager you can figure most of these out easily. Would recommend.
