Not what one would expect after reading the blurb

This story appears to be a mixture of fantasy (magic) and "political" thriller like so many old environmental movies.
But I couldn't be farther from the true... The magic theme is there but only as an illusion. And the political part is also there but not the main focus. In reality, this story has an amazing twist that will make it worth to reach the end.
Still, besides the main turning point of the story, I can't say it was a great page turner.
The narration is good and a great fit for the main character.

Short but Intense

Lottie is happy in the town of Delta. As her 17th birthday approaches, she’s introduced to her great aunt, Flora, who for mysterious reasons, does not leave her home. When the government comes in, interested in breaking the nearby reservoir, they leave the residents no choice but to leave. Lottie refuses though, confident that there are outside forces in control. Forces that will keep her and her family safe no matter what.

Like other Jordan Elizabeth books, this story packs a real punch in just a couple hours. The plot was intense, and Lottie was a relatable character. The ending of this novella makes me curious as to what book two could have in store.

Narration fit the tone well.

Delta Magic

Lottie Madison is a typical young girl, living with her family in the small town of Delta, New York. Close to celebrating her 17th birthday, she is introduced to her great aunt, Flora, a recluse confined to her home because of a mysterious illness. At the same time, the town is facing flooding by the government in order to improve the Erie Canal.

As everyone in town receives their eviction notices, the Madisons refuse to leave or believe that they will have to move along with everyone else. Instead, they seem convinced that they are protected by some type of magic. When Lottie begins to ask questions, she finds out more about her family than she ever knew and some of it isn't very good.

I enjoyed this short story and the author did a good job of drawing the reader/listener into the events surrounding the town of Delta. At the same time, I could feel the emotions in Lottie and her need to find out the truth. The narrator, Danae Bianes, did a great job and added a lot to my listening enjoyment. I was given the chance to listen to the audiobook version of this book by the author/narrator/publisher and chose to review it.

A Story That Stays With You

I had originally written a review for this title, but had found that it hadn't been saved so I am writing again in the hopes this one will stick.

I am an avid reader, so much so that I can forget a book pretty quickly if it was lacking any special magic. It has been a few months now and I still remember this story. I have heard of town's becoming lakes before, but this was the first time I felt put in the shoes of people who had actually gone through it. The narrator captured the innocent nature of the protagonist and I was drawn into the story.

I definitely recommend listening to this book.

Okay

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily posting this review and all opinions expressed herein are my own.

I was very interested in this book as I grew up not far from the area described in the book. However, I found a real lack of development of the characters and I found the MC Lottie to be generic and not very interesting. The story wrap up was quick - and lacked tension. As I listened to this book, I found my mind drifting many times so I had rewind and listen to parts of it again. Overall, it was just okay for me.

I look forward to reading the next book

This book was given to me at my request and I am providing a voluntary review:

This was a cute little book. It was a little short for my taste, but still very entertaining. I was actually surprised when I saw Book 1 in the title. Usually when authors do that, they leave the ending in a cliffhanger, forcing you to buy the next one if you want to know what happens. Not the case here. This makes me even more curious about book 2. The narrator did an excellent job! I will definitely be looking to read the next book!

Mysterious and unique novella

A story based on actual events in the 1900s, with a twist! Lottie is a girl living a normal life in her village. When news arrives that the village is to be drowned for a reservoir, her life is turned upsidedown.

This story has mystery, magic and kept me interested throughout. What a unique and brilliant plot with a totally unexpected twist! Jordan has an amazing imagination and i look forward to hearing more from her!

Danae narrated well and clearly. The performance felt like the perfect fit for the story.

Overall, i would recommend this thrilling and mysterious unique novella.

It’s okay

•audiobook•
2.75
Most of the time, if I find a plethora of 4&5 star ratings, I’m leery to pick up the book.
However, the book description seemed simple, the read quick, and included historical fiction with a dash of paranormal. So I thought maybe it was tightly written and driven by strong characters.
I wasn’t terribly disappointed but it wasn’t edge-of-your-seat-page-turning fascinating.
It started off gripping and dripping of mystery and intrigue but then it sharply drops off. Within the last twenty minutes is when everything is TA-DA - exposed. No clues to figure it out.
Then it’s the graphic terror of why the aunt is restricted to the home ...
I like stories to be tied up, but our main character escapes Delta too easily. The prologue doesn’t seem like she’s ever looking over her shoulder, which is like the store bought bow at the end.
I wouldn’t recommend it, as it didn’t quench my thirst and took too long to finish this 2 1/2 hour book, but I wouldn’t tell someone to specifically avoid it.
The narrator was okay as she read the book. It neither helped nor hindered the rating.
This is my voluntary review of an audiobook received for free.

Magic will keep Delta safe...

Delta, Echoes of New York Book 1 by Jordan Elizabeth was an easy, entertaining listen. I don't want to give too much of the story away, as it's a shorter listen, but Lottie and her family live in Delta. The state wants to create a reservoir right where Delta lies. As the families move out to other cities, Lottie's family is strangely confident that the magic that they have will keep them safe and that nothing will happen to them...that is until the magic gets disrupted in a strange way that you'll never see coming. I really enjoyed Delta and it's a good standalone listen.

Danae Bianes did a good job narrating this story. She sounded age appropriate for Lottie and did a good job of bringing the reader into the story. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher for an honest review.

The sinking of a village.

Jordan Elizabeth is a new author to me, but as her main work appears to be fantasy and erotica, that's not really surprising. Delta, however, is an historical fiction novel, centred around the creation of Lake Delta above the nineteenth century village by the same name. The narrative includes a touch of the magical, but magic in terms of people's beliefs at the time.

Lottie is the eldest daughter of the Madison family. She attends the small village school and helps her family with daily chores. Her life seems quite normal until news arrives that the village is to be cleared to open the way for a reservoir. The village is in turmoil but her family seems to be strangely calm.
There are some interesting seeds sewn at the beginning of the novella, when Lottie visits a Medium who predicts water in her future and declares that she is not who she thinks she is.

I was prompted to do a bit of research around the village of Delta, which was flooded in the early 20th Century. What was the Mohawk River, nr Rome in the State of New York, is now the beautiful State Park. Businesses and homes were either raised to the ground, or removed to other locations. People were offered some financial recompense, but finding a farm to buy was challenging. Most seemed to head towards family in other parts of the State.
The flooding was intended to enlarge the canal system in the state, for commercial transport, but sadly, within a few years of these events, the train system took over and the canals became disused.

This was an enjoyable listen but could well have been a much longer novel, rather than a novella; there is plenty to flesh out and add detail to.
Well read by Danae Bianes.
