あらすじ・解説

Maine Game Warden Mike Bowditch finds himself in a life-or-death chase in this next thriller in the best-selling mystery series by Edgar Award nominee Paul Doiron, Dead by Dawn.

Mike Bowditch is fighting for his life. After being ambushed on a dark winter road, his Jeep crashes into a frozen river. Trapped beneath the ice in the middle of nowhere, having lost his gun and any way to signal for help, Mike fights his way to the surface. But surviving the crash is only the first challenge. Whoever set the trap that ran him off the road is still out there, and they’re coming for him.

Hours earlier, Mike was called to investigate the suspicious drowning of a wealthy professor. Despite the death being ruled an accident, his elegant, eccentric daughter-in-law insists the man was murdered. She suspects his companion that day, a reclusive survivalist and conspiracy theorist who accompanied the professor on his fateful duck-hunting trip - but what exactly was the nature of their relationship? And was her own sharp-tongued daughter, who inherited the dead man’s fortune, as close to her grandfather as she claims? The accusations lead Mike to a sinister local family who claim to have information on the crime. But when his Jeep flies into the river and unknown armed assailants on snowmobiles chase him through the wilderness, the investigation turns into a fight for survival.

As Mike faces a nightlong battle to stay alive, he must dissect the hours leading up to the ambush and solve two riddles: which one of these people desperately want him dead, and what has he done to incur their wrath?

Hold on for a wild ride!!!

This is the 12th book in the Mike Bowditch series and it is THRILLING!!!! I could not have stopped listening even if I wanted to. I really enjoyed the way the author laid out the story. This book begins at the end of a very long day for Bowditch. He’s leaving an area in Maine where he has been looking into a case that had been ruled accidental and closed four days years earlier. He is feeling nervous and is keeping his eyes on his rear view mirror when he comes across spikes intentionally set in the road ahead of him. Traveling at a good clip and now with four shredded care tires he has no control of his vehicle. Off the road he goes into a frozen river, his hybrid wolf crated in the back and a shooter waiting for him to emerge. Mike has no idea who is after him or why. He finds he’s in the middle of nowhere, he’s wet, the temperature is dangerously cold his phone is wet and he’s lost his sidearm in the river. Mike has 10 minutes to get warm before hypothermia sets in. Ok, that takes care of the first paragraph !!!!
The pace of this book doesn’t let up and the cat and mouse game continue to ramp up right through to the end.
Henry Leyva does an outstanding job narrating. I really like him and wish he narrated more mystery/thriller books.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

Quite the let down

I've been a long time Mike bowditch series reader. Previously I could not put any of the books down. they are captivating to say the least. I read many books by many authors and Paul Doiron has always been my #1. This book was beyond a let down. Boring plot. Very minimal excitement and mystery. i had a hard time even keeping my interest to finish the book. seems like the author has run out of creativity. hope the next one is much better

Not my favorite

The story was good but... I don’t like the format. I’m not a fan of books that constantly jump back and forth on a time line.

Felt like a tennis match.

Too much jumping back and forth for me. A good story that could have been do much better if some if chapters were strung together.

Best Book Yet!!!

I've had the privilege to have listened to all of Doiron's books and find this one to be his best book of the series. So far this year I've listened to 152 books and this one would be in the top five easily, maybe even the top two. The author's ability to paint the state of Maine in words is awesome and his ability to make me feel the characters are individuals I know is at times chilling. I recommend if a listener has not yet listened to this narrator do this series they are missing some of the best on the audible book market. I don't say this often about books, but this is a work that should not be missed.

Bring back rest of the cast

Finally just read the ending. Needed to use other characters that he has developed. this was not his best work. He has developed some great supporting characters. He just left them out. Doiron is better than this. l think he got lazy.
Henry Leyva was great as usual.

Thrilling and gripping to the last word!

I’ll be honest and say I had concerns about this one, thinking it was just a going to be a hurt and on the run Mike surviving in the woods but oh no!
It was so much more, the parallel and forth survival and detective stories twisting through this one are incredible and had me on the edge of my seat.
Definitely one of my favourites from Mr Doiron and this genre!!!

Thanks for this story Paul!!!

Henry Leyva knocked it out of the park again too, he’s a masterful performer
