Nick Robles is a criminal trial attorney and a part-time charter boat captain, and he’s had a bad run of karma. The last thing he needs, twenty miles offshore from Port Canaveral, is a dead girl waving to him from a patch of sargassum weeds.
A day later, the wealthy and beautiful Karina Terrell walks into Nick’s office. Her philandering husband, Jack Terrell, a Florida state senator, has been hanged from a tree on a secluded beach. Someone has removed one eye and placed it in a leather pouch around his neck. The police consider Karina a suspect. Her father is Adolfo Terzo, head of the Tampa mob.
Two days later, Nick undertakes to defend a local deck hand who is suspected of the dead girl’s murder.
Nick’s two new cases seem unrelated until the medical examiner finds a broken knife blade in the crotch of the dead senator. The blade belongs to a small knife found in the pocket of the dead girl, and—more bodies with one eye and leather pouches begin turning up on Florida beaches. Nick finds himself in a labyrinthine world of political corruption, Dominican gambling syndicates, unscrupulous real estate developers, Odin cultists and child traffickers. His major problem is staying alive.
