あらすじ・解説

In her new book, the Sunday Times and New York Times best-selling author of Damaged tells the story of the Dawn, a sweet and seemingly well-balanced girl whose outward appearance masks a traumatic childhood of suffering at the hands of the very people who should have cared for her.

Dawn was the first girl Cathy Glass ever fostered. Sweet and seemingly well balanced girl, Dawn's outward appearance masked a traumatic childhood so awful, that even she could not remember it. During the first night, Cathy awoke to see Dawn looming above Cathy's baby's cot, her eyes staring and blank. She sleepwalks - which Cathy learns is often a manifestation in disturbed children. It becomes a regular and frightening occurrence, and Cathy is horrified to find Dawn lighting a match whilst mumbling it's not my fault in her sleep one night.

Cathy discovers Dawn is playing truant from school, and struggling to make friends. More worryingly she finds her room empty one night, and her pillow covered in blood. Dawn has been self-harming in order to release the pain of her past. When Dawn attempts suicide, Cathy realises that she needs more help than she can give. Dawn's mother eventually confides in her that Dawn was sent away to live with relatives in Ireland between the ages of 5 and 9, and Cathy soon realises that the horrors Dawn was exposed to during this time have left her a very disturbed little girl.

One of my favorites by Cathy Glass

I love all Cathy's books but this one is particularly interesting and sweet. I won't give anything away, but I learned a lot about self-harm and ways children blame themselves for traumas they experience and what can be the outcome of that. A very moving story.

Drawn Out, Little Compensation

This book was difficult to listen to, but not for the reason you would think. The foster parents constantly let Dawn walk all over them, and as someone who spent 5 years myself in the system, kids need dependable boundaries. This family isn’t capable of setting them. And for those of you who are listening to find out what happened in Ireland, it’s mentioned briefly in the last 15 minutes of the book. Without an actual recovery story, this book felt incomplete.
As far as the narrator goes, anytime Dawn had any lines, she yelled in my ear. I found myself CONSTANTLY messing with the volume to avoid shattering my eardrums and waking my neighbors.
I wouldn’t recommend spending a credit on it.

It was ok

It was good but damaged was much better. This one was a little repetitive and not much surprise at the end that you didn’t already read in the summary/synopsis of the book.

poorly written

this book had to be written for a younger audience. At times I almost turned it off. The narrator sounded as if she was trying to explain something to a 5 yr old. It was very annoying. It was based on a true story of a young girl in the foster care. The story itself was somewhat interesting, just very poorly written. If you don't mind being talked down to, then listen to it. I think it might have been better if I had gotten it in the written form.

Really?

I got so frustrated with the foster mom. Was she really that blind?
Ugh, then thinking she monitized from the children she did not appear capable to care for was my final thought.

My favourite audible book!

I loved this book and felt sorry for dawn. Why did she cut her wrists? Cathy seems so nice and I'm sure that she will still foster a lot of children. How lovely of dawn to call Cathy! Denica fairman is an amazing narrator and makes me feel like she is Cathy Glass. I hope that there would be more! ~Sunny

Sadly, this world is full of sick people

A sad, true story of the child care system. And an amazing woman that had more love to give, and help other children. Kathy Glass has a great ability to tell a story. I recommend any of her books.

Another happy ending

As always Cathy Glass writes with warmth and compassion about another child she fostered. The narration was superb as with all her other books. This little girl's homelife was so sad, but her inner strength was amazing. To survive the pain and rejection her family inflicted on her and still manage to have a gentle and positive outlook on life was truly awe-inspiring. For the author and her children to work so hard with Donna was remarkable. In spite of everything Donna has to cope with, she still manages to settle in well at the end. Amazing growth and achievement on her part.

Heart warning

I am working my way through all of Cathy Glass's books, what an amazing woman. Every story is truly heart warming and heart breaking at the same time. Every single audio book so far has had me completely gripped, I experience the emotional rollercoaster every time. Denica Fairman reads/presents the audio book fantastically, using different accents and emotions which really create a scene. You won't be disappointed with any Cathy Glass book!

Cathy Glass

I love Cathy Glass novels based on her experiences with Foster children but i did find myself rolling my eyes or sighing out loud with some of this novel, could be, being that this was based on her first foster child and her lack of experiance as a foster carer at the time but i just found it very predictable unlike her other stories.

Very frustrating

I am a huge fan of Cathy Glass, her work as a foster carer and her written works, but this one has me rolling my eyes in exasperation.
While I appreciate that this was back when Cathy was fairly new to foster care, I felt that the way in which this particular case was dealt with was severely masked and inappropriate, in particular between Cathy and Dawn’s social worker.

wow

Cathy Glass has the ability like most great authors to take you inside the book as though you are living it, it makes your heart crumple to hear the horrible things these people have gone through but when Cathy tells her story and the way she deals with these lost souls is unbelievable and truly makes your heart skip a beat at the end, no matter how bad the situation of the child is she gives them infinite love and always leaves an imprint. I bought one of her books at the local store one day and the addiction to her books slowly started from daddy's little princess to mummy told me not to tell. I am now on the 8th book and wanting more which im about to buy.
I would definitely recommend Cathy Glass's books ANYDAY.
