あらすじ・解説

A no-holds-barred, warts-and-all account of life in London's financial heartland.

'Who is Cityboy? He's every brash, suited, FT-carrying idiot who ever pushed past you on the tube. He's the egotistical buffoon who loudly brags about how much cash he's made on the market at otherwise pleasant dinner parties. He's the greedy, ruthless wanker whose actions are helping turn this world into the shit-hole it's rapidly becoming. For one period in my life, he was me.'

In this no-holds-barred, warts-and-all account of life in London's financial heartland, Cityboy breaks the Square Mile's code of silence in his own inimitable style, revealing explosive secrets, tricks of the trade and the corrupt, murky underbelly at the heart of life in the city.

Drawing on his experience as a young analyst in a major investment bank, the six-figure bonuses, monstrous egos, and the everyday culture of verbal and substance abuse that fuels the world's money markets is brutally exposed as Cityboy describes his ascent up the hierarchy of this intensely competitive and morally dubious industry, and how it almost cost him his sanity.

a remarkable story

I was tranfixed by this remarkable and blisteringly honest story about the banking industry. Grossly overpaid and incompetant sleezebags and scumbags at the controls of the banking industry with OTHER PEOPLE"S MONEY.

I noticed he jumped ship just before the banking bubble burst and I wish him well in his next career- because he has surely burned his bridges by his frankness....

Funny & Brusque!!

I'm not a big fan of pretentious books and it can normally take me hours of searching to find a story I can risk buying. It's unfortunate but my particular taste demands realism, intelligence and practical simplicity. I absolutely LOVE this audio book and can recommend it highly. This guy is a keen observer and a wonderful communicator because many of the things I found hilarious are inseparable from life in the square mile.

This work is clever, humble, insightful and quippy. I love the main character and the straightforward manner the author has used to give it to you straight. The narrator is fantastic and adds to the story by genuinely enjoying the whole tale. Buy this audio book and cancel anything scheduled for 3 plus hours because you WILL NOT pause it.

Also; I laughed so loudly that my neighbours want to buy it too.

Criticism? Well I?d say that the book could have done with more detail.... what it was like to have a new Porsche? Where did he live? Who did he deal with outside work and the city? How did his family deal with his success and the changes in him? How did he himself ?feel? on the roller coaster ride upward? More about his rivalry with Hugo and his golfing skills after the drubbing? Detail about the changes from snot nosed kid to successful Stock broking Powerhouse, The evolving relationship with his brother..... What did his family ACTUALLY say about the changes in him?

In all I loved it and listened to the whole thing in one sitting whilst rewinding periodically to catch the bits I laughed through. I?ll revisit it time and again; and look forward to more from this author.

Entertaining, if not terribly informative.

This is a fun little book about the greed, hedonism, corruption and general childishness of some of the members of our esteemed financial institutions. I suspect revelations about such things are not as shocking as they might once have been to a generation reared on "The Wolf of Wall Street", but Anderson still has a way with words and a way of making his various anecdotes entertaining.

What the book lacks however, is any real point. I'm not entirely sure what I or anyone else is supposed to do differently in response to these "revelations". Except perhaps lobby for a crackdown on insider trading, and treat the talking heads on TV with appropriate skepticism. It will certainly however please anyone who has ever felt that city-types are over-paid for what they do, since Anderson is unashamedly baffled as to why he was paid as much as he was.

The narrator is good, really captures the spirit of the book in a natural way.

A laugh-out-loud funny moral tale for our time

Anderson bravely bares all, including his at times distorted soul as he is seduced into joining the highest rollers on earth -- stockbrokers. Originally a leftist hippie without much rudder, he falls into working in The City of London, the world's largest (in terms of money) financial centre in the world. There he meets with unexpected success and finds that blagging and boozing is a surprisingly lucrative pursuit. He succumbs to the drugs and debauchery, and can't help but develop a super-nemesis. A man so gruesomely successful and monumentally heartless that beating him, at his own finance bullsh*t game becomes Anderson's life focus. The writing is excellent with many pointed phrases and descriptions that will never leave my brain. And it is rip-roaringly funny. My only bone to pick with you, Mr Anderson, is your statement at the end that the financial sector of The City, does generate loads of taxes for good, public use. Ah, if only. May I recommend to you, Nicholas Shaxon's, 'The Finance Curse.'

Much shorter than expected.

Perhaps the day to day spreadsheets were more prevalent than the garish macho bravardery fuelled by booze and cocaine?

Disappointing - expected so much more

Read this after absolutely loving The Buy Side. Doesn't come close at all. Disappointing as had heard good things and hoped for a London equivalent. My search continues...

Entertaining but hypocrytical

excellent, entertaining actually found myself more motivated in my current insurance based sales role than before reading, thus contrary to the author spreading apparent good in the world.

Taken with a pinch of salt very entertaining read for those who work in the City.
Recommend.
