Welcome to the audiobook edition of Chinese Idioms and Fables for Young Readers, part of LingLing’s Chinese Stories for Young Readers series.

This bilingual collection is specially created to help young learners develop their Mandarin skills while discovering the richness of Chinese culture and traditional wisdom.

An idiom is a familiar expression whose meaning goes beyond the individual words themselves. Many Chinese idioms, known as chengyu (成语), are made up of just four characters and have their origins in ancient stories and fables.

Inside, you will enjoy ten traditional Chinese idiom stories that have been passed down for generations. Along the way, you will meet characters who work toward their goals or learn to see beyond appearances. Others rely on luck or take things too far. Their choices may make you laugh or shake your head. Their experiences still have something to teach us.

As the stories unfold, you will discover the idioms they inspired, explore the wisdom behind them, and learn why their lessons still remain meaningful today.

Each bilingual story begins with a selection of key words in Mandarin and English, followed by line-by-line narration, first in Mandarin and then in English. This gives young learners the chance to listen carefully to the Chinese while following the meaning in English.

You will also hear a Wisdom Corner exploring the meaning and lesson behind the story, followed by a short, fun reflective question to help you think about the story and share your own ideas.

For an extra listening challenge, Mandarin-only versions of all ten stories are grouped together after the bilingual chapters, giving you another opportunity to practise your listening skills and see how much you can understand.
