あらすじ・解説

A queen, a castle, a dark and ageless threat - all await Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes in this chilling new adventure.

The queen is Marie of Roumania: the doubly royal granddaughter to Victoria, empress of the British Empire, and Alexander II, tsar of Russia. A famous beauty who was married at 17 into Roumania's young dynasty, Marie had beguiled the Paris Peace Conference into returning her adopted country's long-lost provinces, single-handedly transforming Roumania from a backwater into a force.

The castle is Bran: a tall, quirky, ancient structure perched on high rocks overlooking the border between Roumania and its newly regained territory of Transylvania. The castle was a gift to Queen Marie, a thanks from her people, and she loves it as she loves her own children.

The threat is...now, that is less clear. Shadowy figures, vague whispers, the fears of girls, dangers that may only be accidents. But this is a land of long memory and hidden corners, a land that had known Vlad the Impaler, a land from whose churchyards the shades creep.

When Queen Marie calls, Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes are as dubious as they are reluctant. But a young girl is involved, and a beautiful queen. Surely it won't take long to shine light on this unlikely case of what would seem to be strigoi? Or, as they are known in the West...vampires.

Tedious and churlish

Russell is churlish with Holmes…very snippy…The story just drags on with a bunch of superfluous babble that bored me to tears…I have NEVER felt this way about this series. Needless to say, I am terribly disappointed & wishing I had not used a credit for it. I could have done without it and been happier about the Russell-Holmes series.

Great story, much improved over the last few books

I liked this much better than the last few books in this series. it features more Russell and Sherlock interaction and scenes from both of their perspectives. it reminds me a lot of The Game, which is a good thing because that is one of my favorite Mary Russell books. I think Russell and Holmes are best in more far flung places, the settings of the last fee books (Monaco and Venice) were not as interesting and I really didn't care for Mrs. Hudson's stories.

They are in Romania and they do talk a bit about vampires but the story is not about vampires at all, it is very much a mystery and there are no supernatural explanations for anything (as is right in a Holmes story!)

The title is perfect as the castle in the story is a character just as much as the people in the story. If you liked some of the earlier stories like Garment of Shadows and Dreaming Spies I think you will like this one.

Narrator sucks the life out of a vampire-inspired

I generally love Laurie King's mysteries, but this was the first one I had listened to rather than read in hardcover. Not sure why they picked someone who sounded like an octogenarian with a scratchy voice to be the 20-something heroine. Narrator also made Holmes sound downright bored/boring. The story picks up once we do away with the endless descriptions of the Castle Bran, and King shows a lovely meta-awareness of her literary sources (folk tales & vampire tales). The last several outings, though, have been overshadowed by the locale (Venice, Transylvania) rather than character development--especially as concerns Holmes' being torn between brother Mycroft and wife Mary. I hope that King returns to character, and that Audible finds a better narrator for the next book.

Fascinating tale

I love the way Ms. King writes. The stories are interesting, informative, exciting and full of intelligence. I love all of her stories. I will probably listen again right away. The story is rich snd can stand rereading or re-listening.

On of my favorite Mary Russell novels!

Loved that Russell and Holmes were together and were using teamwork to solve the mystery.

Mystery, suspense, history and fairy tail.

A very enjoyable listen that had everything I look for in a book.
Loved my visit to Transylvania.

Milking the text

This book seriously could have been cut in half particularly during Russell's solo scenes of sleuthing. I haven't read the whole series with this being maybe the 3rd with the first 2 being the earliest. Ms. King seems to have only grown in verbosity. The reader was slow and laborious.. A summer time filler of little consequence. Some interesting european history post WWI.

Good but

Not as good as the previous Mary Russell books, to me. Still I enjoyed it. I just didn’t find the characters too engaging.

long winded such a shame...

I find that the more books the author writes in this series the more long winded the narrative becomes. the plots are good and there are clever twists and turns but not enough actual 'happenings', so much filler where the narrator bangs on about this and that as if to fill the pages !
I appreciate the books are more about Mary Russell but the action is so much better when she is with her unlikely husband.
The best parts about all the books is the travel , described so you could imagine yourself being transported to different lands.

Fiction at its best.

This is one of the best of this series! Loved it! The narrator is amazing. In her consistency in respect of accents. She really brings it to life.
