Pavel Florensky was a priest who electrified a godless state, a mathematician who defended holy folly, and a theologian who insisted that the deepest truths arrive in pairs that refuse to be reconciled. He stayed in Russia when the door to escape stood open, and the century that ground him to dust on a prison island has spent the decades since not quite knowing where to put him. Too philosophical for the Church, too devout for the academy, too playful for the martyrologists, he remains gloriously unfiled.

This is not a biography in the ordinary sense, and it is certainly not a canonization. It is written by a man who does the same work Florensky did, who tries to reconcile science and religion and to mend a broken world, and who knows from the inside both the joy of building bridges and the suspicion that some of them lead nowhere. The result is a portrait drawn with affection rather than awe, with pity rather than worship, and with a stubborn cheerfulness that refuses to let a tragic life curdle into mere tragedy.

Along the way the book asks why those who join things together, who marry faith to reason and metaphor to logic, are so often the first to be destroyed; what it means that a man can hold two contradictory truths at once and call it not confusion but honesty; and whether God is the solution to our problems or simply the unbearable, loving mystery we keep mistaking for an answer. It is a book about contradiction, escape, memory, and the curious courage of staying glad while the ground gives way beneath you.

For listeners who care about the meeting of science and faith, about the texture of a vanished world, and about what it costs to want everything to fit, this is a quiet act of witness offered, almost reluctantly, by one bridge-builder to another.
