Dan Kysor
One Saturday, I went to the local drug store to buy some batteries. I suddenly got the brilliant idea that why pay for them, I would just walk out of the store with them. Soon, I heard over the intercom "John and Dave to the front". And I was busted.
Barbara recalls the call from the Alameda police; "Mrs. Kysor, this is Sergeant Chapman of the Alameda Police Department. Do you have a son named Dan?" "Yes. Why?" "We are holding him here in the station. He was picked up for shoplifting. Can you come down to the station?" "Yes, I'll be there right away." The problems. Would they never end?
At the station, I had a long talk with the sergeant before seeing Dan. He told me that Dan had taken some batteries without paying for them from a drug store six blocks from home. The manager had watched Dan at the camera counter, more out of curiosity than anything else, wondering how a blind boy could know what batteries were on the counter. He watched as Dan selected the batteries and walked out the door, then all of a sudden he realized he had stolen it.
'We aren't going to arrest him,' the sergeant said, "but I am curious as to why a blind person would attempt to shoplift when he has no idea how many people are watching him." "I think he wanted to be caught."
This was a truly scary incident for me. I was put in the back of the squad car and actually read my rights. I commented to the officer that this was just like "Dragnet".
