あらすじ・解説

Actor Kelsey Grammer, best known for his roles in the TV sitcoms Cheers and Frasier, delivers Bitter Brew, a compelling mystery featuring Detective Bill Walsh, an upstate cop in the quiet, rural town of Beatriceville, 200 miles north of New York City, who suspects foul play in the death of millionaire city transplant Jonathan Kimball, even though the evidence points to suicide, not murder.

Between the four grown daughters he adores - even if they make him crazy - his complicated relationship with his ex, and his annoying boss, probing into a death that most have deemed a suicide is the last headache Bill needs. But the inexorable desire for justice and to do his job lead him to delve into many town secrets that most in Beatriceville citizens would prefer to keep unexamined.

Filled with colorful characters and with a riveting pace, Bitter Brew will keep listeners guessing until the unexpected denouement.

Come for Kelsey Grammer, Stay for Kelsey Grammer

I'll admit it. I got this book purely because I'm a fan of Kelsey Grammer. This is a good book. The biggest flaws in the book for me were the main character's obsession with sex, sexuality, and gender issues. Going from a decent mystery to a obsession over whether a character is male or female was a pretty strong drawback.

Not My Cup of Tea

Engaging enough to keep me listening, but the old fart alley cat was more pathetic than sympathetic. The sexual content was a turn-off and I figured out the culprit well in advance of the revelation - or should I say revulsion.
Mediocre.

Good story, humorous and suspenseful with llamas a-plenty

At times outright hilarious, honest depictions of characters that were made more real by the humor and curmudgeonliness of the author. Felt like an old time radio show

This has been a surprise from running into it on Audible - no idea Kelsey had published a murder mystery, my fiction of choice. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, finishing with a few swipes at the ending tears. Kelsey is a fine actor and what fun to hear him narrating this book. The locale was a surprise but similar to my own growing up. The plot - ah, just buy it! I will be pacing until his next mystery shows up.

You’re my best view..... Ehhhhhh

Started off okay. Getting really hokey as it goes along. Lost interest. Kelsey Grammer - Love his voice and acting. I think this is made for an older crowd. I’m 53 - So that’s saying something

Despite the predictability, it was great!

I am blown away that KG wrote and narrated this. Okay, he had help, but it has turned out very well. The main character is delightful despite his dirty-old-man lusting after every woman. And his narration is tremendous. 98% of the time, I strongly discourage authors from narrating their books; it almost never turns out well, but this is one of those 2% successes! Good voices, good cadence, and good stress.

The solution to the crime is a tad predictable, but it was still enjoyable getting there. The llamas are delightful, the craft beer interesting; there were even apples, but they were not the uber-tasty apples from Macintosh Country on the east side of the Hudson. The best part of the story is the hero's realization that his hasn't been such a bad life, and his wonderful relationship with his daughters.

Oh! Might there be more stories, like a series? That would be nice.

eagerly awaiting the next installment :)

needless to say I could listen to Kelsey Grammer talk all day. I thoroughly enjoyed the story. there was a bit of gratuitous depravity at the end I could have done without but otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed it and hope there will be a follow-up

Not sure how I feel

The story is decent. I predicted ‘who-dun-it’ reasonably early on, but that’s not a bad thing, that means there were sufficient hints. The main character is what makes me not sure how I feel about this. He’s a bit smarmy and a little creepy. He compares a younger woman he’s sleeping with a little too often to his daughters for my comfort. I understand the author wanting to show he doesn’t just sleep around with young women, but at the same time he also revels in it. The messages are kinda mixed. I liked seeing an older man struggle with this new open minded world, and though he didn’t always understand, he respectfully embraced it. That I enjoyed. It’s not a bad book. It’s modern and on point. It doesn’t blow me away and the main character made my skin crawl a few times. I don’t mind healthy sexual appetite, but he was just so creepy about it.

Who doesn’t love Kelsey Grammer....

Interesting story read in a very easy listening way. He has such wonderful diction and just read it really well. I didn’t love it but I didn’t not like it. There was a lot of poor detective work and the end was a bit stunning and not what was expected but all in all it was an enjoyable way to pass a couple of afternoons. I hope he writes and/or reads another book.

Beautiful narration dreadful book

I was so surprised at how awful this book is - dreadful dialogue, wooden characterisation, hokey all round.

I could only get a few chapters in and just couldn't get past how awful it was. So I'm returning it. It's possible that it may change utterly 10 chapters in and the writing quality improve.

He reads it beautifully of course, but even his rich tones couldn't hide the book-of-the-month writing quality. Returned.

Dear representatives of Mr Grammer,

I would like to register my disgust that I started this novel and it was so funny that I stayed up until 3am to finish it in one go. It’s a hate crime.

It’s not that the plot is original (it isn’t anything new) but the way this book is written and performed makes it laugh out loud funny and I really did care about the characters.

We’re still in lockdown, please pass my thanks on to everyone involved in the release of this title for giving me the best laugh I’ve had in ages.

I would receive this novel to anyone. It is funny (I might have mentioned that), observant and engaging.

Thank you,
Em

Easy listening

I knew Kelsey Grammer would be good at narrating and was curious at how good his book would be. It was easy listening and enjoyable but nothing to write hone about...

Just Ok

For a first book not a bad effort: Pros: started off promisingly, good narration, liked the characters. just a nice length...not too long.

Cons; Just too cheesy!

A good yarn

This story had a large cast of characters and many were quite unique and had modern identities, eg gender-fluid, poly-amorous, Wiccan lesbian couple etc. I’m unsure if this is a true portrayal of demographics in small town America, but I thought that Bill’s response to these identities was very accurate, but at the same time was not insulting. It was a believable insight into the way older generations think about new ideas around gender and identity, and try to assimilate foreign concepts that younger generations accept more easily.

I don’t read mystery or crime novels usually (Kelsey Grammer sucked me in with his soothing voice!), so I’m certainly no expert on them, but I found the mystery to be interesting and compelling and I didn’t know what would happen next.
I figured out the murderer about 2 minutes before the reveal, which I think is a sign of good writing. I’m keen to go back and listen again to hear any clues I missed.

I hope Kelsey Grammer keeps writing, and narrating because he has a great voice and his story was well written and well told.
