Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that causes changes in an individual’s energy, behavior, sleep, judgment, mood, and ability to function. Individuals with bipolar disorder experience intense mood episodes that can include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). When an individual’s mood shifts to mania or hypomania, they may feel full of energy, euphoric, and unusually irritable. However, when an individual becomes depressed, they often feel hopeless and sad and most often lose interest or pleasure in all activities.
