あらすじ・解説

After his wife’s death, retired cop Walter "Pops" Washington has made a home for his ex-felon son in his sprawling, rent-controlled, Riverside Drive apartment. Will a long-simmering feud with the NYPD cause him to lose his home and the family he’s built there?

The play was the winner of the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. An L.A. Theatre Works full-cast recording starring (in alphabetical order): Elisa Bocanegra as Church Lady; John Cothran as Pops; Seamus Dever as Lieutenant Carrow; James Martinez as Oswaldo; Ana Ortiz as Lulu; Larry Powell as Junior; and Emily Swallow as Detective Audrey O’Connor. Directed by Diane Rodriguez and recorded before an audience at UCLA’s James Bridges Theater in November 2017.

🎭 Didn’t See That Coming 🕯🙏⛪️💎💍⚖️🎭

Hmm. This performance is missing something, and having just seen a terrific production of this play live at Capital Stage in Sacramento, I think I now know what. I usually love these LATW productions, but this one is missing a ton of the humor. Everyone’s timing is off, especially Pops, which takes an already imperfect script and just flattens it out. Nonetheless, it’s an entertaining listen. This play will constantly surprise you. After seeing the great James Wheatley play Pops in the Capital Stage production, my daughter and I joked that we never before saw any play that caused us to turn to one another literally after every single scene and say, “I didn’t see THAT coming!” If this Audible site were a discussion board, I would pose two questions for listeners and fans of the play: 1.) Stephen Adly Guirgis is not Black. That disturbs me, given some of the content of this play, which could be construed as reinforcing racial stereotypes. Is anyone else disturbed by the character of Pops (and his son, for that matter) being painted by a white playwright? 2.) How do you feel about the fate of the diamond ring by the end of the play?

Relevant material. Great performance by Cothran.

I really enjoyed the story and twist at the end. Cothran has a great voice that I like to listen to. Had some funny moments amidst the intensity of the story.

Real street drama.

Solid performances deliver a first-rate drama of the streets with real characters and a message to ponder.
