"LJ Ross keeps company with the best mystery writers." (The Times

あらすじ・解説

From the international best-selling author of the DCI Ryan mysteries.

In a world gone mad, who can you trust?

Fresh from a high-profile case in the Paris fashion world, elite forensic psychologist and criminal profiler Dr Alexander Gregory receives a call from the New York State Homicide Squad. The wife of a notorious criminal has been admitted to a private psychiatric hospital and can no longer testify in his upcoming trial. Without her, their case will collapse, but amid reports that the staff are as unpredictable as their patients, who can the police trust?

In desperation, they turn to an outsider, and now Gregory must find the courage to step inside the fortified walls of Buchanan Hospital to uncover the truth. The question is, will he ever be the same again?

Murder and mystery are peppered with dark humour in this fast-paced thriller set amidst the spectacular Catskill Forest.

Plot is my nightmare scenario

Being trapped in a situation where I'm not believed and I can't escape made this a hard novel not to scream my way through. Even being read by my favorite narrator didn't lessen my tension. My dentist will not be happy to see I've been grinding my teeth again.
What if certain things hadn't happened? This story could've ended up like an Edgar Allen Poe tale.

Not a Bad Story

This story reminded me of some of the Godfather in certain ways. It was a nice story with a few twists and turns that took me by surprise.

Richard Armitage did a good job as narrator, even if I felt he rushed through the story a bit. Not a long listen, just under 6 hours, but a good plot.

Bedlam

I am an avid fan of LJ Ross DC Ryan's books, have read all of them, so when I started reading her new character Alexander Gregory books, I was not convinced if I would like him. Bedlam has changed that, what a book and story, a bit short, but you are kept on the edge of your seat through the whole book and I just want the next one to come out. Never to replace DC Ryan, enjoy him too much, but Dr Gregory will come next. Thank you for your books, I have loved reading them all. The narration is excellent and already brings out his character.

Wonderful story and narration..

This was a very good story! It showed how Gregory Alexander was a “real” person and had “real” psychological problems, because of his murderous insane mother. AND he came out a better person after being in Bedlam, as a pretend patient. I liked Dr. Naomi Palmer and I think it would be nice to see her in Alex’s life. Harry, Marco, Kitty Steenberg, Lorena Moreno, etc, were all wonderful characters, and made it a more believable storyline. Oh, and it’s always nice to see Alex’s BFF Bill Douglas.

There was almost some romance and no swearing.

As to the narration: Richard Armitage did a fantastic job on the voices of the male and the female voices as well as their emotions.

Beautifully human

The character driven plot blends the intellectual with the geographical surroundings. Worth the read. And Armitage is brilliant as narrator

And now I’m hooked on Alexander Gregory ...

I didn’t think that another series by Ms. Ross would excite me more that her DCI Ryan series. I was so wrong! I am totally I. Love with the character of Alexander Gregory and can’t wait for the next in the series!

Unbelievably unbelievable full of tropes!

This book is full of tropes. The psychologist with secrets and a dark background, the beautiful understanding and motherly women and not least, the mobsters. I enjoyed the first two books in this series (although not as much as the Ryan books) but was let down by this rather silly and predictable book of psychiatric hospitals, mobsters, beautiful women and FBI. Why not simply let our hero go one book without getting sexually attracted to unobtainable women and for gods sake let him stay at home where the author actually understands the culture! I mean, really!

Loved it

Really loved the story. I only wish it was longer. Richard Armitage's velvet narration is always a pleasure, and it's mind-blowing how he is able to give every character their own unique voice. Five stars for all.

Alexander Gregory thriller

This story is well crafted and the main characters are well drawn. Armitage does his usual super job of narration, adding a Jersey ac cent to his stable of Americans, but he needs to add a few more in future. Recommended.

Disturbing

This is the third book in a series, I had not read the first two but it didn’t spoil my enjoyment of this episode. Whilst visiting the FBI at Quantico, Dr Alexander Gregory and Professor Bill Douglas are asked to assist on a case involving the Mafia which requires Dr Gregory enter Buchanan Psychiatric Hospital posing as a patient. From that point on my head was in a spin, the story was horribly realistic and quickly descended into a situation which is one of my personal nightmares! I was so absorbed in the story I had to listen in one sitting, feeling a sense of disquiet the whole time. Superb writing and excellent narration.

Appalling Scottish accent

I’ve enjoyed all LJ Ross’s audiobooks up until this one. I’ve also enjoyed the Joy Ellis books narrated by Richard Armitage. However this story is ruined by Richard’s approximation of a Scottish accent with is quite frankly awful. Please select another narrator where the story includes a Scottish character.

Yet another LJ Ross masterpiece!

A great story which really draws you in and at times, has you on the edge of your seat! Brilliantly performed by Richard Armitage. Well done (yet again!) LJ Ross! Can’t wait for the next one. If you haven’t tried DCI Ryan yet, then do!

Gripping!

Every chapter leads smoothly to the next and I found it almost impossible to stop listening. The author combines pulse racing action with a subtly developed romance. Armitage is brilliant as ever and I had no issue with his Scottish account.

Gripping.

I was gifted this audio book after a prize draw from a facebook book group, 'The Book Club Audible Listens' in return for a review.

I hadn't listened to the first two in these series so started with them. My first thought has to go to the change in narrators, the first two were narrated by Hugh Dancy so it was definitely weird to go from him to Richard Armitage and it took me a long time to get used to his Scottish accent for the older Doctor. I consciously had to tell myself not to let this distract from the story.

The actual story is very, very good, really gripping in places, I was completely engrossed. Lots of twists and turns and at one point i found myself shouting out whilst walking the dog, thank fully no one was around as I do not fancy a visit to such an establishment. The book was very cleverly written. I have read other reviews about it being short, sure its not the longest book in the world and I guess people want value for money for length vs audible credit/purchase. For the length I probably would not have paid the asking price (as I am enjoying the series I would have used an audible credit on it). However the story is good and very much worth the listen, I am really enjoying this series. I have listened to the first 3 DCI Ryan books so I am fairly new to LJ Ross's work. I certainly plan to read more in the future.

Thank you for the gift, I will look out for the next in this series.

Great story of course it was Author LJ Ross

As I listened to the story rather than read, I would like to say how much I enjoyed Richard Armitage the narrator telling it. I stayed up late into the morning to finish it. A great story I hope we get to meet the American Psychiatrist again too.

I was always going to enjoy this one.

Honestly, Richard Armitage could narrate the instruction manual for my toaster and I'd listen to it and love it.
This story was something of a departure from the first two of this series, but nonetheless very good. I found myself getting anxious for Alex when no-one believed him, and pissed off with Hawke and Johnson for being sell outs. I loved the subtle side-story of Lorena and Naomi too.

Best book I've read in a long time

This was my first Audio book I have listened to and it didn't disappoint. It kept me captivated and coming back for more. A great crime thriller that had me hooked. Richard Armitage as narrator does a stellar job of voicing so many different characters that I could easily visualise them all in my minds eye as if they were different people and not narrated by the same person. Loved it.

my kind of book

really like this series. the first book is probably the first book that has genuinely surprised me in a very long time. I like the idea of a psychologist perspective in a crime thriller. it was a little predictable, a piece that was far fetched but I forgive this as I enjoy the character so much. I would recommend reading the series in order to ensure the connection with the main character. can't wait for the next in the series as hinted to at the end of this book

Another cracker of a book

Goodness, what a ride that was. Alex certainly gets himself into some scrapes. Glad too see he may find some love. Can't wait for the next one. Narration was so good, I could listen to the dulcet times of Richard Armitage all day, smooth as velvet. Swoon....

On the whole not bad

At times this is quite melodramatic and although I really love richard Armitages voice he made me laugh at times and not on purpose. Still it’s an ok yarn. Not to long bit of drama .....oh but no murders. Pity
