"What lies in the bitter cold rests a warm, cozy heart."

In the arctic cold moon of Alaska, two Iñupiat parents, Anaana and Ataata, get ill with a bacterial disease called, tuberculosis, from travelers. Before their daughter, Borealis, can contract the disease, her parents sent her away in a home all by herself, small and dingy on the outside, tender and soft on the inside.

On Borealis's birthday, Anaana and Ataata gifted her a knitted polar bear she named Noonani.

Before Noonani became a knitted polar bear, she was once a tamarack tree with all her needles shed off during the winter solstice. Mistaken for a dead tree, Anaana saws down the tree from Noonani's soothing home. Anaana and Ataata form Noonani into wood pulp thread. Then, they sew her into a one-of-a-kind handmade gift and new friend for Borealis.

Through the sewn-in eyes of Noonani, she grows fond of Borealis's warmth and nurturance, even in the frostbitten cold of the north.

With calmness and care, Noonani wishes, "Be Beloved, Borealis."
