He swam in the Danube with a flotilla of geese who were convinced he was their mother, and he was right about something enormous: that behavior is inherited the way a bone is inherited, that it can be compared across species, and that the categories we think with were shaped long before anyone thought about them. Konrad Lorenz founded a science, wrote some of the loveliest animal prose of the century, and collected a Nobel Prize for work that began with a bathtub full of ducklings. He also wrote, in a scientific journal in 1940, that a healthy nation must eliminate its ethically inferior members before they spread through the body politic like a tumor. He applied to join the National Socialist party and added, in his own handwriting, that his entire scientific life stood in its service. He was still using the tumor sentence, almost unchanged, in a bestseller published in 1973.Most accounts of Lorenz split him in two: the great naturalist, and the regrettable episode. This book refuses the split, because the two are the same argument. Behind the Mirror follows one idea — that the mind is inherited property, and inherited property can decay — from a boy watching jackdaws on a rooftop to a Nobel laureate on a stage in Stockholm, and shows how a thinker of the first rank can be locked inside a frame for sixty years without once noticing the walls. It is a book about geese, imprinting, and the strange beauty of watching animals properly. It is also about how good minds go wrong, why the wild form is not healthier than the tame one, and what any of us would need to notice in order to spot our own locked frame in time. The answer is uncomfortable, and it is not a story about the past.©2026 Boris Kriger (P)2026 Boris Kriger
