概要
A Los Angeles Times investigative reporter’s cinematic account of the infamous Palisades fire and the far-reaching history of California wildfires— arguing that until we understand the full impact of fire in the region, we can never hope to prevent or mitigate them in the future.

On January 7th 2025, Los Angeles Times reporter Connor Sheets crossed into the apocalyptic Palisades evacuation zone. His chronicle of that day is marked by unforgettable portraits— a college freshman battling flames from his childhood home’s rooftop, a couple working to evacuate their 17 horses, formerly incarcerated volunteer firefighters cutting through the brush.

The story of wildfire in California, though, reaches far beyond these recent moments. After witnessing the devastation firsthand, Sheets felt compelled to tell the larger history of the place and people who have lived for centuries with the looming threat of swift destruction. Where the Fire Met the Sea takes readers to the days when the Tongva and Chumash tribes deployed controlled burns, to the region’s rapid development as Spanish missionaries arrived in the late 18th Century, to its division into ranches in the 1800s, and to the real estate boom that has drawn in thousands of people ever since World War II. Throughout, fire has been a constant.

The 2025 fire wasn’t an anomaly; the extent of the cataclysm, its human and environmental tolls, and the inability to stop it—these set it apart. Propulsive and human, Where the Fire Met the Sea is a sweeping story of wildfire, a hard look at what brought us to this moment, and an invocation of what we need to do to protect the region in the future.
