What does it truly mean to follow Jesus on His terms rather than our own? In this sermon on Matthew 8:18–22, Pastor Maiola Vivas helps us to explore Jesus' divine authority as He defines the real cost of discipleship. After teaching, Jesus prepares to cross the Sea of Galilee into a completely different culture.
Through two encounters, Jesus addresses the motives of our hearts and the priorities that guide our lives. When an eager scribe offers to follow Him anywhere, Jesus points out that following Him is not a path to earthly honor but a call to share in His self-denial. Then, another man eager to be a follower asks to delay his commitment until a future time. Jesus reminds us that we cannot put Him on hold for worldly security or according to our personal timetables.
This message confronts the temptation to treat faith as a convenient addition to our lives, but rather invites us into total surrender instead. While the cost of leaving behind earthly comfort and misplaced priorities may feel heavy, the prize of knowing Christ and experiencing His love, joy, peace, and eternal presence is worth far more than anything we could ever give up.
