Sandra Birchmore was 12 when she joined the Stoughton Police Explorers program. At 23, she was pregnant and found dead. Former Massachusetts police officer Matthew Farwell is now on trial, accused of killing her to conceal years of sexual abuse. Her story raises disturbing questions about grooming, abusive relationships, and who the justice system actually protects.

We unpack the Sandra Birchmore case, Matthew Farwell’s text messages, allegations of police misconduct, and the Massachusetts investigation that preceded federal charges. We discuss coercive control, domestic violence, pregnancy-associated homicide, and the institutions entrusted with protecting women and children.

True crime tells us more than what happened in one case. How sexual abuse allegations are investigated, how victims are treated, and whose stories are believed in criminal court can tell us a lot about what happens in other courtrooms—especially family court.

Drawing on our own experiences with divorce and child custody battles, we discuss what happens when mothers raise concerns about their children’s safety and face parental alienation allegations, financial penalties, and pressure to comply. When the system dismisses evidence of abuse or protects people in positions of power, the consequences reach far beyond a single criminal case.

Disclaimer: At the time of recording, Matthew Farwell’s trial was ongoing, and he had not been convicted. All allegations and disputed facts discussed remain alleged. This episode includes commentary and personal opinions for informational and entertainment purposes only. It is not legal advice.
