A frozen rail switch trapped a killer
In this episode, we follow the disappearance of Alice Osborne from a New Mexico freight depot town and the sequence of small workplace details that guided investigators. The story traces the hours from a Tuesday trivia night to a cold December morning and asks how a frozen rail switch and a neglected maintenance entry became the clue that changed everything.
Person: Alice Osborne
Date: December 10
Location: Cutter's Bend freight depot and County Road 7
Person: Bruce Watson
Event: frozen rail switch and a broken side door at loading bay four
- Alice’s red Honda Civic was found at 5:50 AM on County Road 7 with engine cold and no footprints in the snow.
- Alice worked customer service at the Cutter’s Bend depot and had a distinctive, consistent signature on intake forms.
- Bruce Watson, a bay worker described his feelings toward Alice as an obsession and signed a September maintenance report about a broken side door.
- The depot’s bay four door-closest to the switching yard-had a flagged broken latch that was never repaired and only Watson had detailed knowledge of its condition.
- Ten days after she vanished Alice’s name appeared on a baggage tag on a sealed cargo crate at the depot while the man who forged it worked double shifts nearby.
